by association, after the technical term ("Ventil" in German)?
(I exclude the possibility that Leo loved to play Puoliintumisaika :-) | | (2) Posted by Viktoras Paliulionis [Tuesday, Nov 5, 2024 13:21] | This is a technical term.
Valve is a device that regulates, directs, or controls the flow of a fluid (liquid, gas, or slurry) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing passageways. | | (3) Posted by Joose Norri [Friday, Nov 8, 2024 08:16] | Yes, no connection to Leo Valve... may I remind you of Brian Stephenson's observation, when reviewing the Leo Valve booklet, that it is highly unusual for a composer to be named after a theme. | | (4) Posted by Hauke Reddmann [Friday, Nov 8, 2024 09:36] | Google gives "valve"="wake up" as Finnish meaning, is that correct?
The amusing thing is of course that Valve was composing when Valve was in,
so there are even a few Valves by him :-) E.g. Albrecht 256.796:
(= 9+7 )
variant 1.Qc1 Sc7 2.Rd8# | | (5) Posted by Viktoras Paliulionis [Friday, Nov 8, 2024 10:39] | The valve mechanism in a water supply system and in chess works in a similar way: one line can be closed, the other can be opened.
If there is one water source (one linear piece), then we have a valve, if there are two sources (two pieces), then we have a bi-valve. | | (6) Posted by Joose Norri [Friday, Nov 8, 2024 10:55] | "Google gives "valve"="wake up" as Finnish meaning, is that correct?"
No. Valve means the state of being awake.
The surname is old and I presume it's just possible there is some other, archaic meaning behind it. | | (7) Posted by Viktoras Paliulionis [Friday, Nov 8, 2024 11:07] | More precisely, it should be called "diverter valve".
In a diverter valve used in a shower system, when you switch the valve, it opens the flow to the showerhead and closes the flow to the bathtub faucet, or vice versa.
It's the same in the example: opening one BQ line and closing another at the same time.
EDITED
In German, the theme is called "Sperrwechsel".
I found in one German source:
Obwohl es einen Komponisten gab, der sich Leo [Erland] Valve (Finnland, 1914-1952) nannte und das Thema bearbeitete, ist das Thema auf das englische "valve" (engl. = Klappe, aber auch z.B. Ventil, weswegen es auch den weniger passenden Namen Ventil-Thema bekommen hat) zurückzuführen.
ChatGPT translation:
Although there was a composer named Leo [Erland] Valve (Finland, 1914-1952) who worked on this theme, the name actually originates from the English word "valve" (meaning, for example, "Klappe" or "Ventil", which is why the theme has also been given the less fitting name "Ventil-Thema" in some contexts). | | No more posts |
