Siegfried Hornecker Memorial Tourney, WCCC Jurmala 2024

Quartz launches a thematic tournament open to all, in the memory of Siegfried Hornecker. The tourney has two sections: A) Moremovers and B) Studies. Theme: in direct play, a white piece occupies an X square at
least twice during the solution, then leaves it. These occupation moves must be done without capture and without check. The thematic piece may not be a white King. Exemples and other details, see
https://wccc2024.wfcc.ch/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Hornecker-MT.pdf

Her name was Sarah, not Siegfried.

Thanks for stepping up and organising this Paul.

There may be some who weren’t aware of her coming out as transgender. I can understand therefore that both names might be used in the announcement for clarity. But to try to airbrush Sarah out of existence is disrespectful to her memory and to other LGBT+ problemists. Yes it’s confusing yes it may not make sense but Sarah was wonderfully neurodiverse in several dimensions. We are asked just to accept who she was.

One thing I respect about T.R.Dawson is that even though he was a straight man living in conservative times he was a loyal friend - an ally one might say now - of the gay composer C.M.Fox who was (in the words of the BCPS website) “an influential figure in the early development of the BCPS, Britain’s leading helpmate composer and perhaps the second most important British figure (after Dawson) in unorthodox composition at the time.”

Sarah’s mother Moni Rehbein entitled her 2015 biography: “Chaos is checkmated - love rules”. We have to be kind.

I agree, it's a kick in the face to her memory that this tournament is under her deadname. As the only other trans person I know of in the world of chess composition: pretty much everyone who knows me knows me as Sophie He; if I were to somehow manage to become someone worth holding a Jubilee or Memorial Tourney for, I wouldn't want Jubilee or Memorial Tourneys held in my name to be held in any name other than "Sophie He".

Though I know she requested that her older compositions, published before she came out, continue to be attributed to "Siegfried Hornecker" for ease of archival/search, she also requested that this not apply to any compositions that came afterwards. In that spirit, it's only right to respect her wishes on the matter.

Also, it's Pride Month, for crying out loud! At the absolute least, naming the tournament after her deadname and thus erasing her trans identity, during Pride Month, is tone-deaf!

Honestly, if you don't respect her wish to be called "Sarah" you are not close enough a friend to run a tourney in her memory.

Torsten, is your post a proposal to boycott Alain ? or Paul ?

I met Siegfried, I never met Sarah.
Later, I read that Siegfried wanted to be called Sarah. OK.
Does it mean that all the problems and articles signed by Siegfried should be changed and considered signed by Sarah ? I think not, of course not!

You have a similar case with Markus Ott, At a stage, he wanted to be called Johannes, will you change the signature of his published works ? Of course not !

In terms of memory, almost all the works were under the name of Siegfried, it is completely legitimate to honor the memory of Siegfried.

Jacques, there is a misunderstanding.

The tourney should be labelled "Sarah ... MT", because that's the way she wanted be addressed lately. Similarly, the text should refer to "Sarah", not "Siegfried".

You're right of course, mon cher Jacques, except when you ask a good problemist to read. Not all problemists can read.

Jacques, it's right to honor the memory of Siegfried Hornecker, except that that's no longer their name, so rather: you honor the memory of Sarah Hornecker by quoting problems published under the name Siegfried Hornecker.
When someone changes their name through marriage, you don't go "Oh, well, I never met them after their marriage, I'm still gonna call the by their maiden name." or "Most of their life they were called..." It's part of their history and fine to acknowledge that (possibly even quite necessary as an explanation for readers who don't have that context), but no reason to not call them by their (current!) name. So, obviously, the tourney should be the "Sarah Hornecker MT", I'm with Torsten here. Show some respect.

There is also the editor and composer of England Cedrick Lytton. His previous surname was different (which he changed). Should we continue to refer to him by his old name because many of his earlier contributions were under the old name? Of course not.

I don't say what you should do.
Choose whatever you want.
I just say that those who prefer to use Siegfried are legitimate in this case.
It's mainly a question of how long a name has been in use and how famous it is.
The exemple given by Jakob about marriages is not relevant, even proves the opposite : so many women have changed their name to that of their husband and yet people or friends continue to call them by their old name.
Respect has nothing to do with this.
Respect merchants should be careful not to be disrespectful themselves

First and foremost, Siegfried was autistic, the official diagnosis is “autism, subtype Asperger’s.”
This illness can be seen as the basis for Siegfried's extreme patterns of thought and behavior and we should accept that we cannot understand this illness.
I remember: there was a similar fuss almost 20 years ago when Siegfried decided to convert to Islam, he told me that in 2008. And the list goes on.
A possible key to approaching Siegfried's extreme nature is the book mentioned by Andrew in (3), available only in German,
but it could happen that you are even more confused afterwards!?
Maybe all those who don't understand autism should leave this discussion now?! I'll be out then!

Unfortunately, it's not a discussion about anything else than identity politics.
And also unfortunately, in politics the extremists of both sides have won,
thanks to Internet and advertising and how social media work.
It's no longer a matter of "What is the best for the *whole* country and people?"
It is "US! OR THEM!"
In a certain sense, we are lucky that we are a small community which means
that attention can't be hogged by a few people and everyone can still contribute
and be heard.
My *personal* decision was - even though e.g. I find the gender star a bad idea -
to call Sarah Sarah, for politeness and respect. I don't *lose* anything if I do.

@Jacques Rotenberg: I don't know what "people or friends [who] continue to call them by their old name" you have, but any "friend" of mine who insists on calling me by my deadname, disrespecting my wish to be called Sophie, and my desire to *not* be called a name that isn't mine, is no friend of mine. Respect has everything to do with it.

Do you have any living friends who have changed their name? How many of them do you continue to call by their old name, even when they insist that you don't? Do you think Sarah would consider you a friend if she were alive, if she knew that you would refuse to call her Sarah despite her wishes?

---

@Wilfried Neef: I don't know why you're bringing up Sarah's autism in the first place, or painting autism as this thing that cannot be understood, or painting Sarah and other people with autism as having "extreme patterns of thought and behavior". A memorial is no place to besmirch the dead.

In any case, all this is completely irrelevant to what name this memorial tourney should be called. Sarah wished to be referred to as Sarah (except when referring to her old compositions from before the name change). Even if this wish was "extreme", as you put it (it certainly is not), that is no reason not to fulfil it. You don't know Sarah better than she herself did.

(There's an essay that could be written how on such views of people with autism are actively harmful to those with autism; and how similar sentiments have been used against other groups to ignore their views, refuse to accommodate them, and dehumanise them. But I'm not sufficiently-well-equipped to write that essay. If you genuinely do believe that autism is some illness that "we cannot understand", and that people with autism have "extreme patterns of thought and behavior", then I would suggest that you have a good long think about how you view and treat people you perceive as having mental illnesses or disabilities, compared to those whom you don't.)

The FIRST sentence of Moni Rehbein's book "Basti's World" about her son Siegfried is: "For most people it is difficult to empathize with autistic people or to understand them because they are simply so different from other people."
That's why autism comes first! The person who knew Siegfried best put autism first!
