3rd Round (#2 Isardam) - Judges: Vlaicu Crisan and Eric Huber (Romania)

Theme proposed by the judges:
Isardam twomovers (#2) without other fairy pieces / conditions. In at least two variants in the real play, Black unspikes a white spiked piece. The white spiked piece mates by spiking the black unspiking piece. The white unspiked pieces can be the same (see ex. 1) or different (see ex. 2). The spiking line can be created after the key (see ex. 1) or may be alreay existent (see ex. 2).

Thematical examples:
(= 7+6 )
#2 Isardam
Example 1
A. Ronald Turnbull
The Problemist 1997

In the initial position there is no spiking line.

1.d5! [2.Sh7#] - spikes WK
1... Bg4+ (unspikes WK) 2.Kf5# (spiking BB)
1... Bf4+ (unspikes WK) 2.Ke5# (spiking BB)

(= 11+7 )
#2 Isardam
Example 2
B. Mangalam R. Parameswaram
The Problemist Supplement 2001

Here the two white thematical pieces are already spiked :
- wPb7 on the wBg2-bBa8 line
- wSb4 on the wBe7-bBa3 line

1.Sd8! [2.Sf7#]
1...Rc6+ (unspiking Pb7, spiking Rd2) 2.b8=Q# (spiking Rc6)
1...Rd6+ (unspiking Sb4, spiking Qe2) 2.Sd3# (spiking Rd6)

A few remarks to description of thematic examples.

In the first one, there is in fact spiking line in the initial position, Ra6-Kf6-Rg6, but it is not thematical.

In the second one, the defence 1...Rd6+ does not spike bQ as it is already spiked before on line Rd2-Qe2-Rf2 (it is in fact used in the mate in the first variation, as 2...Qb5?? is not possible), only the black half of spiking line changes.

Also, it is worth noting that 1...Rc6+ 2.b8B+ does not mate because of 2...Bb2!

Thank you for the excellent corrections to the description of thematic examples, Juraj! In order to avoid further confusions, I suggest the following corrections to the theme announcement:

In A, the wrong sentence: "In the initial position there is no spiking line." should be replaced by the correct one: "The wK is initially not spiked."

In B, the spiking side-effects appearing after black variations are are not mandatory for the theme requirements so the comments "spiking Rd2" and "spiking Qe2" should be better removed from the thematic description.

 QUOTE
(sent as personal note)

Dear Milan,

I would like to ask you a question about the theme of Liga Problemista 3 – 2008.

It is said that “the white spiked piece mates by spiking the black unspiking piece.”

Strictly, the white piece must mate.

But one can assume that the white piece moves and mate occurs (given by this white piece or by another one).

Is the second understanding thematic?

I decided to email you because in my opinion the judges are not supposed to know the authors of questions about the themes, although I know this would never influence their award. I think you can act as a link between the judges and the authors.

...

The judges' answer to this question will be interesting to all potential contestants. Eric, Vlaicu?

Actually, the theme requires that "the white (formerly spiked, now unspiked) piece mates by spiking the black unspiking piece."

The mate can be either direct (by the thematic unspiked piece as shown in the two examples) or indirect (using a battery for instance) - both are acceptable, as long as black spiking is exploited in the final mating position.
