A sad message appeared 17 hours ago in Facebook in Petko A. Petkov account

Hello Everybody,

My name is Denislav Petkov and I am Petko Petkov’s son. Now, let me have something to explain.

Unfortunately, on Friday 19th July 2024, my Father became an ischemic stroke. Now, half month later, my Dad is still in the hospital and the things are not going better.
On the 19th, in our home, about 11 a.m., I found my Father fallen in the bathroom, on the floor. He was conscious, but talked no clear and normally. He couldn't lift himself off the ground with his own muscle strength, in that moment there was no such strength. I picked him up, bring to bed and right now called the ambulance. We went to the emergency hospital in our city Sofia, Bulgaria.

After some examinations, the medics have got my Father’s diagnose – an ischemic stroke (and hypertension). They left him in the hospital for about a 7 days, after that they released him to go home for rehabilitation. However, the situation has gone worse and my Father was hospitalized again, in the same hospital. Now, he is there and I am there for help during the day.

The medical care here, in Bulgaria, is with very low quality. Now my Dad has no improvement and he is again in the hospital. He is paralyzed maybe at 70-80%, but I hope he gets better and I help for that all the day and the night.

For that reasons - now my Father could not, of course, solve or compose problems. He could not do such many other kind of activities, too.
I don’t know whether he will be able again and when it will be. Nevertheless, we are fighting for his life and health. Also we hope to have good cure & rehabilitation soon.

Thank you for reading. Greetings, take care and all the best wishes from us:
Petko and Dennis

I wish dear teacher and friend Petko Petkov to go through such an ordeal and recover. And I wish Denislav faith and patience in Petko's treatment.

Sad update today on Petko A. Petkov's Facebook account:

Dear Chess Friends,

I am Denislav Petkov and it's sad to inform you all, that my Father Petko Andonov Petkov (82 years old) has died in the hospital today, this morning around 6:00 am. Today it's Sunday, 11-th August 2024.
Unfortunately, he was not able to recover and rehabilitate, because of his body paralysis. One day after another, more and more functions of the body have stopped to work. I have seen my Dad for the last time yesterday afternoon - and his movements were stopped just at 100 percents. I hope he didn't have felt the torture.
Thank you people, that many years ago you were gut colleagues and friends of Petko Andonov Petkov . Let we remember him for more many years in future.

All best wishes to You Everybody,
Denislav Petkov.

A disturbing loss to the chess problem world. A great composer, judge, editor, and writer. And a friendly and supportive person. His absence will be deeply felt.

It's hard to believe in the sad news, followed by a long silence in this forum. We've got used to Petko's wins in all his battles, to his readiness to surprise us rising again and again, always coming back with new projects and optimistic ideas. Now we are getting used to the fact that the chess composition world will never be what it was.

in 2022, petko won his last world champion composing title in fairies at the age of 80! hardly to imagine any other world champion of that age...
he was definitely a great composer, but not only that.

i remember our talk decades ago, when i experimented with orthodox twomovers using promoted force.
petko came to me and encouraged me, saying promoted force is a very natural element which should have been generally accepted in composition.

recently he proved his great humanity, too.
i believe that now is the right time to reveal that in the financial help for ukrainian chess composers, petko was one of the most generous donors!

thank you, my friend.

ANDA Fairy Planet No.7 will not be published. Composers who sent their originals to it may send those originals elsewhere.

I published this small selection of his helpmates (yes! He composed many helpmates too and won some FIDE tourneys too) 11 years ago.

Petko was a good friend of mine. His death has saddened me greatly. The November issue of The Problemist will have an article of mine about his life and his work.
