QUOTE Presently the rules defined in the 1 Jan 2018 version of the FIDE Laws are valid. Relevant for compositional chess are articles 1 to 5, 9.2 and 9.3.
See https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/E012018 for the relevant FIDE rules.
The previous version of the FIDE Laws referenced was 1997, which is difficult to get hold of (neither FIDE nor WFCC sites have a copy!) Also, in the intervening years, there have been many improvements made to their phrasing and structure, due to great work by FIDE IA Stewart Reuben and others, which we might as well profit from. Extending the scope to include 9.2 & 9.3 allows us simply to access for the first time the FIDE rules for Draw by Repetition (including, critically, the definition of "position") & 50 Move Rule, which in any case have been referenced elsewhere in the Codex (Articles 18 & 17 respectively). It makes no attempt to change the current level of (im)precision of those conventions.
This neutral change removes a barrier to entry for serious newcomers to the hobby. I know of no problem whose soundness changes as a result of the modification. Any jokes which do depend on trick phrasings can be protected without prejudice by the "golden age" keyword defined in PDB, to clearly show their relation to the rules at a particular period in history, and make it easier for future solvers to get the jokes.
My sincere thanks to Kjell Widlert, Brian Stephenson, Bjorn Enemark, Harry Fougiaxis & Neal Turner for all their work. Also my gratitude to Stewart Reuben, who has shown himself over the years to be a true friend of problemists. | | No more posts |
