What is the definition of "two-way batteries"? Especially in fairy case (with circular rose lines and similar).

The direction of the second battery is opposite to the first after the long-range piece passes through the intersection with the front piece. I hope this can work also with circular rose lines and similar.

Ah, so it's required that the second battery must be created by a critical move, not a pericritical (roundabout) maneuver.

Thank you, Janos!

Dear Dmitri,

I'm glad that we have clarified the concept of "two-way batteries" in this helpmate theme. Many thanks for your question, it can help others!

Janos

Some more questions regarding the set theme:
- Should in the first two solutions a front piece of the battery be the same (like wRh2 in example) or is it allowed to be a piece A a front piece and a piece B a rear piece in one solution and vice versa in the second solution?
- Does the expression "the battery that has been created" for the third solution mean that it must be created in the third solution as well, or the expression refers to creations of batteries in the first two solutions?

- The first two solutions the front piece of the battery is the same (like wRh2 in example). The role of the theme pieces in a twin problem (where the front piece is the wB, the long-range piece is the wR) can be interchanged as Zilahi.

- The expression refers to creations of batteries in the first two solutions only! The battery mate it's not oblatory after capturing the front piece! See the fairy example.

To 9th post:

By exchanging theme pieces (batteries: B&R to R&B),  the solutions are doubled.

See this sketch:

H#3 wRf2, wBh6 / bPd7

a) Solutions:
a1) 1... Rg2 2… Rg5 3… R~ #
a2) 1... Bc1 2… Rd2 3… R~ #
a3) 1.d5 Rf3 2.d4 Re3 3.dxe3 B~ #

b) Solutions
b1) 1... Be3 2… Bd2  3...  B~ #
b2) 1... Ra2 2... Bd2 3...  B~ #
b3) 1.d5 Bd2 2.d4 Bc3 3.dxc3 R~ #

As a third solution if we take turns capturing the front pieces, we get the Zilahi.

This is a non-thematic scheme:

White Bh8 Kg6 Pc5 Rh5
Black Pa7 Ra6 Pe6 Rf5 Kc4 Pe4 Pf4 Sh3 Ba1
7B/p7/r3p1K1/2P2r1R/2k1pp2/7n/8/b7
H#3 4 sol.

a1) 1.Rxc5 Rh7 2.Kd5 Rg7 3.Ke5 Rd7# thematic
a2) 1.Rd5 Re5 2.Kd4 Kg7 3.Kxe5 Kg6# thematic

a3) 1.Kd5 Bf6 2.Rg5+ Bxg5 3.Ke5 Bf6# non-thematic
a4) 1.Bf6 Rxf5 2.Kd4 Rxf6 3.Ke5 Rf5# non-thematic, because the front piece cannot attack the king in the mate position!
