International German Championship

The 40th German Championship in solving and 1st harmonie-aktiv open will take place this coming weekend at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Dresden-Leubnitz.

The top 10 solvers are Eddy van Beers, Arno Zude, Boris Tummes, Martynas Limontas, Michael Pfannkuche, Dolf Wissmann, Vidmantas Sadkus, Hans Uitenbroek, Andrej Selivanov and Abdelaziz Onkoud. With their average rating of 2493 this will be the strongest tourney in the current World Cup so far. Unfortunately, we will miss category 2 by just 7 points.

The competition starts Saturday, 2nd April, 2pm local time.

Stay tuned for updates and preliminary results.

The studies took their toll too.

Limontas is leading with a perfect score.

Followed by Zude (42), Baier (41), Pfannkuche (40.5), Tummes (40) and Wissmann (39). All other have 36 points or less.

The tourney is run very smoothly by director Axel Steinbrink.

Round 4 starts at 9am tomorrow morning

Dolf Wissmann complained about getting too many points for the second threemover. So this one was double checked by the director. Some solvers lost one point as a result - amongst them Baier, who dropped to fourth place.

Currently, the selfmates are on. The final s#5 is by Gamnitzer!

Satkus jr. does the s# in 45min with a perfect score. He moves up to seventh place. Otherwise no changes in the general classification, because all other top solvers score 10 points.

It is very interesting and a nice surprise for me, that the solver who took the third place and was mentioned in the reports only by his last name, is in fact Silvio Baier and not the GM Ronald Baier. Silvio's performance was really impressive, for his first (?) rated solving tourney. Congratulations!

Silvio is the helpmate editor of Die Schwalbe and is also known as a prolific proofgame composer.
He quite regularly won solving competitions at Sachsentreffen but this one was his first official tournament and he was very close to winning it (1 point behind Michael Pfannkuche). Impressive performance indeed.

Dresden is a city that would satisfy both the problemist and the tourist in us. I would like to visit it someday, and what better occasion than the WCCC?
