New fairy idea

I have an idea for a new fairy genre (say like Madrasi). Where can I check if it was already discovered by another problemist and given a name? Is there an extensive list of known or recognised Fairy forms anywhere?

You'll not find anything near a complete list online -- in fact, you'll generally find only the most common fairy elements, accompanied by highly imprecise wording (the rules), and no treatment of special cases, or anticipations.

Nevertheless, you want to be sure you check the common sites:

0) Win Chloe has a large array of fairy elements (though they do not always contain descriptions).
It's always worthwhile to search through -- and experiment with -- a larger wheel of colors.

[edit: I just downloaded the new version of Win Chloe, v3.07, which now has descriptions for a large number of the listed fairy elements.]

see Definitions -> usual fairy conditions, also Defs-> other fairy conditions, and also Defs-> constraints.

The only site I am aware of which attempts to provide a list [albeit an incomplete one] of rules-by-default.
Without axiomatic rules [by default], you have only flavored chaos.

just good examples -- but, sometimes you can reverse engineer the special case rules from them.

this page needs a massive rewording, but still has some good value.

Beware: if Wiki were written by counter-intelligence agents in the fairy chess world, it might improve upon the information presently provided.

5) If your idea is remotely playable, as a game, there is some chance it has been invented as a chess variant.
This would be bad news, because the sites online are generally teaming with a chaotic disarray of bad ideas, which are mainly used to hide good ideas.

Frankly, the best course is:
1) write the most economical set of rules you can, but be complete (clearly explain all special cases, and try to remove all ambiguities),
2) present this (hopefully with a few diagrams!) to a few trusted friends with a healthy interest in fairy chess. If your friends don't do fairy chess, don't worry -- an email is enough to make new friends.

If the reviews are good, you might want to enlist their help -- especially providing better example problems.
Otherwise, listen objectively (don't get defensive about a silly fairy chess element)!

3) publish it.

Note: it is far easier to find the anticipation of a fairy-invention by checking the example problems for anticipation -- for example, I discovered one (perhaps of many) anticipation of the "parry-series-mover" ("Black/White only moves when checked") this way.

Finally, remember that a lack of any governing body guarantees that the inventor who colludes with sloppy editors shall have complete freedom from all historical fact. :-)

ps: if your idea is related to madrasi, you might want to also consider variations (conditional and otherwise) on paralyzing units.

Thanks to Kostas and Kevin for suggesting the Poisson weblink. I and happy to see that my great (!!) invention is not among the listed items there and also in Juraj's wonderful website.

Thanks again to Kevin for the very helpful suggestions. I am now getting in touch with some of my friends to get their views. Actually my idea is not related to Madrasi, I just mentioned it hoping that mine will be as popular one day !!

Thank you Kostas and Kevin.

I have since formalised the new fairy condition SUPERGUARDS.

But there are issues to be resolved in its implementation by Winchloe when using SUPERGUARDS and Neutral pieces. Hope Mr.Poisson will be able to modify.
