Shortest mate with X in Chess 960 The shortest mates with a specified piece in standard chess
are known. You can now solve 6*959 riddles, maybe there is
even an unique SPG among them. Here is a mate in 3 by Black
with a rook. (2 sol., sorry)

Been there, done that?! |

Shortest mate with the queen:
(= 16+16 )
1.e3/e4 b6 2.Qa6 mate
Shortest mate with a knight:
(= 16+16 )
1.Se3 g6 2.Sf5/Sg4 Sg7 3.Sh6 mate
Obviously, the starting positions can be altered slightly with the same solution.
I found no useful solution with a bishop, however.
(= 16+16 )
Obviously, this is mate with White's third move. Is there really nothing shorter?
(= 16+16 )
Another mate with the third white move where Black doesn't need to do anything.
Pawn might be possible in 3 or 3.5. Here's one in 4:
(= 16+16 )
1.b3 a5 2.Kb2 f6 3.Ka3 e5+ 4.Ka4 b5 mate
This position also allows for the black rook to mate in 3, which is trivial |

Knight 3#: already possible in standard chess
Bishop: 2.5# is easy, dito
Pawn: don't see how even 3.5 should be possible as
the K makes it at maximum to rank 3/6. Too many
flights there! |

(= 16+16 )
1. f4 0-0 2. f5 e6 3. fxe6 fxe6++
That's not what you meant by mate with pawn, I assume? |

Nice job finding a pawn mate in 3.5 moves, Ulrich! |

@Ulrich: Sounds legit :-) (It's an eon-old discussion
who mates in case of a discovered check...) |

I think the "shortest x in fairy condition" has potential.
AntiKöKo
1.g4 e5 2.g5 Bb4 stalemate
AntiKöKo, mate exclusive:
1.e4 h5 2.Q:h5 R:h5 3.e5 R:e5 mate |

Marine Chess h3.5: 1.d4 f6 2.Neh6 Pof7 3.e3 Pog6 4.Sih5# is even a SPG.
(Of course you can vary this mate considerably.) |
