So please don't abuse it with (free) commercial messages!
(unless your intention is to lose this Forum completely) | | (4) Posted by Sarah Hornecker [Thursday, Sep 20, 2007 15:26] | Ok, then we'll only talk about free software now. :-)
Sorry, wasn't my intention to abuse. | | (5) Posted by Frank Richter [Thursday, Sep 20, 2007 15:47] | Milan, I fully understand your bother, but I think that the deleting doesn't give a good impression to the readers.
I would call the light version a first effect of your open source database. Or not? | | (6) Posted by Administrator [Thursday, Sep 20, 2007 17:34] | No bother at all! Just a principle. The whole economy is based on the principle "give something to get something (more) in return". It is neither natural, nor fair (let alone friendly) if professionals try to use the service of an amateur for free. | | (7) Posted by Geoff Foster [Friday, Sep 21, 2007 00:23] | I made my post because I thought that readers would be interested in chess problem software. I have no commercial interest in the product and nobody asked me to do it. It never occurred to me that I was doing anything unethical or unfair. | | (8) Posted by Juraj Lörinc [Friday, Sep 21, 2007 10:00] | I would like to offer my experience with posting (potentially) commercial material on service provided to me for free by someone else.
I have my weblog in Slovak language for almost 3 years now. More than 600 articles and I am just one blogger, albeit one of the most active, from thousands present at the same server. More than 110 000 articles up to now. Having wide palette of possible problems, abuses, even legal issues etc., the administrators have set up "codex of blogger" regulating what is allowed and what is not allowed. The codex itself is developing, everytime some issue pops out with no easy solution from existing rules AND/OR common sense, it is put into codex. Current version is 1.45...
http://info.blog.sme.sk/c/11694/Kodex-blogera-na-blogsmesk-verzia-145.html - in Slovak, unfortunately.
The codex covers also the posting of (potentially) commercial material. It is said that blogger should not post it if there is some direct gain for him, that any offer of profit to him from company should be reported to administrators etc. On the other hand, posting experience with commercial products, either positive or negative is usually ok and also posting the information about something happening, releases, etc.
All possibilities in the previous sentence (experience, info) are naturally prone to "PR attacks" and therefore they are watched by administrators. A blogger has to gain his own history or credit or however you want to call this - and expectedly bloggers with good credit are treated differently from those without it. Starting bloggers are usually checked allowed to post, but checked more thouroughly.
E.g. me. If I posted almost anything, whether praising or critical or just informing about any product, I would be believed. They know me.
The question is now (and the reason why I am writing this long post, sorry :-)) in which way the content of Geoff's and Siegfried's messages was inappropriate.
It should be said, that administrator is the boss on any server, for good reasons and I understand that. If he says something is inappropriate, it is, full stop.
However, usually his classification appropriate/inappropriate is based either on unwritten rules (common sense) or written rules (codex). The rules allow users to check whether their potential action - posting something - is or is not in line with administrators view. This could prevent users from inadvertently overstepping the line.
So should we understand the case of this thread that any information about commercial products here is inappropriate, whether written for profit or just in belief somebody might find it useful? | | No more posts |
