Surely, in problem chess W=B and P=1,S=L=3,R=5,Q=9
does not hold when finishing up a problem.
- How many black material would you put on the board
to eliminate a white piece?
- How many black material would you put on the board
to eliminate the last white pawn? [Guilty as charged -
cf. my SCHWALBE 8839 where wPa5 could easily replace
bPa7Pa5Pc7Bb6.)
- If nothing else matters, do you cover the flights
e4 and d5 with a Sc3 or a Bh1? (Sorry, we are out
of Rd4s anyway :-)
And so on.

As few as necessary. :-) Not more than the white piece, though, i.e. one piece. But it depends if new variations arise etc.

I rather put pawns up to eliminate pieces. But I compose studies...

Sc3 because of greater mobility (8 fields instead 7) and since knights are generally considered to be slightly less material than bishops. However, maybe Pd3 and Pc4 or Pe4 might work fine, too.
