Videos of chess problems During the last few days I have been working on my openings for OTB chess using some of Chessbase's videos, and a thought suddenly struck me: Wouldn't videos be a useful format for chess problems, from a solver's perspective? You can pause the video for as long as you want, so you can try to solve the problem for as long as you like, and set it up on a board if you prefer, just like when solving a problem from a magazine. Then you can start the video again and watch the instructor's explanations along with the moves. I can see at least three advantages here compared to solving from a magazine:
- The instructor could give some insight and show some themes that the solver didn't necessarily think about even if he/she found the right solution.
- If the solver didn't manage to solve the problem, he/she could pause the video again after the first moves (or after the instructor's first explanations) and try again from there.
- Some people simply find it easier to watch videos than to read.
I have seen quite a number of chess-related videos, but none regarding chess problems. Do you know if anyone have tried this? |

Vladimir Janal has some task problems on YouTube but there are just animated solutions with music... Entertaining (and with quite some views) is the following link on a study of Ivanov: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxUJFX9bahc. Maybe that is how such videos should be done... |

The first two links are youtube channels with some studies explained.

About your very interesting video of VC's problem (that gives also good headake !) 2 questions :
Why solution of a) does not work in b)?
How works the e8 pawn ?
(If "dummy" why Kxe8 does not work ?
If "normal" how is Kf7 possible ?) |

See full discussion here: http://juliasfairies.com/problems/jf-2013-iii/no-445/
In short:
- BPe8 is treated as a dummy. So WK cannot capture it, because he cannot execute the "make" part of take and make
- solution of b) doesn't work in a) because WK has flight e8
- solution of a) doesn't work in b) because WK has flight g3 |

Ok, thank you, I did not pay attention to the removing of the h4 pawn in the video (part of the headake mentionned above)
Very interesting (and long) discussion of course.
Perhaps I missed something, but it seems to me that to be completely clear, the wording should be :
Take and Make
Pawns autorized (in their Make part of a capture) to go to their 1st rank.
Pawns on their 1st rank are "dummy"
Capture of a "dummy" pawn is not allowed
This last sentence because the way I understood T and M let me think "natural" to say that in case of capturing a "dummy" piece, the Make part of the move will be a 0-move and therefore authorized.
Something alike could happen when capturing a Rose or a rook on cylindric board. |

There is a huge discussion about it on Julia's Fairies, but essentially it is Take & Make Type Dupont. In standard Take & Make the pawn is not allowed on the first rank.
Definition of Type Dupont, as provided there by Vlaicu Crisan:
QUOTE 1) If a unit Y makes a capturing move to a square s, then, after capturing (“Take”), Y must execute (from s) a further non-capturing move (“Make”) obeying the (orthodox) move laws for the captured unit, as part of the complete capturing move. If there is no such move, Y cannot capture the unit.
2) Checks are orthodox, kings cannot be captured, pawns can move to the first rank of their own color where they are subsequently immobile, pawn promotion takes place only if the pawn move ends on the 8th rank and not immediately after the “Take” part of a Take&Make move.
3) In the combination Take&Make-Circe, a Circe rebirth takes place only after the complete Take&Make move, not immediately after its “Take” part. |

Can you put take & make instruction in the video? Otherwise any randoms passers-by in youtube will find this great problem completely opaque.Just a suggestion :-) |

Thanks for the links! The videos look a lot like the type of presentations I was thinking of. Yes, explanations of fairy conditions are definitely a good idea. I am not used to fairy conditions myself, and Diyan Kostadinov's explanations made it much easier to follow his presentations. |
