Lu, as he was known to everyone, was a chemistry teacher by profession, and served as BCPS librarian from 1964 to 1993. He was not a composer, but had an expert knowledge of two-movers, and assembled a collection of over 50000 award-winners. He took over the Selected Two-movers column of The Problemist from Comins Mansfield in November 1982 and conducted it until his death. His composing hero was Ottavio Stocchi, and with Geoff Foster he produced a two-volume collection of Stocchi’s best work. Lu moved in quite distinguished opera circles in his younger days, and had a substantial collection of Italian opera on LP, CD and video. He co-authored a book entitled "Opera and wine, wine in opera" with Valentino Monticello.
Lu had been suffering from cancer for some years, but managed to attend the European Solving Championship at Sunningdale last April, where he was delighted to meet some of the composers whose work he so much admired. He will be greatly missed. | | (2) Posted by Jacques Rotenberg [Monday, Oct 25, 2010 14:38] | The "Selected Problems" by Lu in The Problemist was one of ny favorites. | | No more posts |
