Bristol countered by Novotny

In a recent chess game, the following position occured:

(= 11+11 )

D. Abel - E. van den Doel, Bad Zwischenahn, January 2011
White to move

The game continued with 22.Bh8! Sd4! 23.Bxd4 Rxd2 24.Qxd2 Qd5 and a few moves later a draw was agreed.

Would love to see some examples of this - Bristol countered by Novotny - from compositions.

Best,
Siegfried

Not to forget the Umnov effect ...
(This is from latest issue Schach 2011/3).

From an OTB view, what speaks against Rxd4 instead of Bxd4,
followed by Rd8 on Q-any, with a simple win? Just curious :-)

This win is so obvious. Probable explanation could be that c5 is a black pawn but then I cant find a reasonable previous move for black - was it RxSe2, but why?)

@Hauke and Seetharaman:

Black can defend with 23... Qf8.

Gentlemen, you can find the full game here:

Dennis Abel (2394) - Erik van den Doel (2574)
Bad Zwischenahn, January 2011

1.Sf3 Sf6 2.c4 g6 3.Sc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.d4 O-O 6.Be2 e5 7.Be3 exd4 8.Sxd4 Re8 9.f3 c6 10.Bf2 d5 11.exd5 cxd5 12.O-O Sc6 13.c5 Sh5 14.Qd2 Be5 15.g3 Sg7 16.Rfd1 Se6 17.Sxe6 Bxe6 18.f4 Bxc3 19.Qxc3 Bf5 20.Rd2/i d4! 21.Bxd4 Rxe2 22.Bh8! Sd4! 23.Bxd4/ii Rxd2 24.Qxd2 Qd5 25.Bc3/iii Qxc5+ 26.Qd4 Qxd4+ 27.Bxd4 Rd8 28.Rd1 f6 29.Kf2 Kf7 30.Rd2 h5 31.Be3 Rc8 32.Bxa7 Ra8 33.Be3 Rxa2, and a draw was agreed.

i - Abel had prepared 20.Bf1 but forgot the move
ii - 23.Rxd4 Qf8 also should be equal
iii - 25.Be3 Qc6 is not better

(after Ilja Schneider; Schach 03/2011, p.54)

Obvious move is obvious. Wonder where I got my 2300 ELO. :-)

Thank you Bojan. I wrongly assumed that even after 23... Qf8 24. Rd8 is winning! My apologies to Siegfried.
