The Encyclopedia of Chess Problems

The forerunner is obviously the "ABC of Chess Problems" by J.M.Rice.

Of course, there are many other "forerunners".
I do hope that there will be many "followers" too!

I'm sure the ChessCafe reviewer is referring to the general Larousse encyclopedia and not to this infamous chess version: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/larousse.html

Mind to post a PDF with the problem author list here? If it's not good for
anything, it's at least good for the egos :-)

Here it is:
http://www.matplus.net/pub/ul/ecp_composers.pdf

This is the transient folder and that the file will not reside there for a long time, let us say: until you acquire the book :-)

Keep in mind that our primary goal was to quote the most suitable, illustrative or historically significant examples. We didn't pay special attention to names of authors, except for those who have themes named after them.

Please allow me to take this opportunity to express my admiration for Kari Valtonen's dedication to the work. His contribution was, I feel, much bigger than my - he was the co-worker one can only dream of!

Both of us owe a lot to Messrs. Newman Guttman, Uri Avner, Hannu Harkola and Neal Turner for their devoted and enthusiastic help which went far beyond the proof-reading only!

<rageguy> Acquire a book with no problem by me in it? </rageguy> :-)

Well, in any case I might list it as suggestion for my local public lib.

P.S. The price is now listed on

@Hauke: You are in good company with for example Selivanov and Gamnitzer - just to name two of the greatest recent selfmate componists.

I would always suspect an Encyclopedia to have about a dozen volumes. This would certainly be appropriate because there are so many great aspects of chess problems. But who should be the one to write all these books?

@Sven Hendrik Lossin:

(1) The only way I can understand and explain your cynism is: a revange for my remark on the WCSC selfmates (one of which was signed by you). I am sorry if I offended you, but between being nice and being open I have always opted for the latter (and that will not change in the future).

(2) In our "single volume" knowledge there was neither "Selivanov theme", nor "Gamnitzer theme". Otherwise, there are good chances that they would have been illustrated with examples of these two masters.

You should have in view the fact that the majority of chess problem themes originate from orthodox direct mates (or endgames) and that there are, in relative terms, only sporadic selfmate-specific themes. Consequently, it was not likely that many (if any) problems by specialists of the selfmate genre would be quoted in a book of this type ("Encyclopedy of Chess Problems - Themes and Terms" - note the subtitle!).

Really ? Dozen volumes? Are there so many chess problem terms in existence ? Of course including all composer names (and one representative problem) might take an additional volume. But a dozen volumes? Cant think what would be the material covered unless it is a compilation of all composed problems.

seeth: Are You already with the volume on the Dombrovskis by U. Degener?! more than 1.200 examples of a single Theme, but not yet a complete compilation, even if very representative Maybe still possible to search and purchase through ISBN in some book dealer http://www.lehmanns.de/shop/sachbuch-ratgeber/9409528-9783940531032-50-jahre-dombrovskis-thema

I agree I underestimated. A dozen volumes too low for a complete collection !
