The following two problems were included in the award of the official tourney for h#3.5-n, which theme was: the king moves to a square which had been left before by an officer of the opposite colour.
(= 4+11 ) h#3.5 b)Kh7 goes to d6
a)1...Be8 2.Bf7 Rc7 3.Kg6 Rxf7 4.Kh5 Rg7#
b)1...Rc1 2.Sc2 Bd1 3.Kc5 Bxc2 4.Kc4 Ba4#
(= 3+10 ) h#4 2.1....
1.Se5 Rd1 2.Be6 Bd2 3.Kd5 Kb1 4.Kd6 Bb4#
1.Sf6 Bc1 2.Bf5 Rd2 3.Rf4 Ka2 4.Kg5 Rg2#
One of them got Third Prize, the other got 4th Honorable Mention. 15 problems (roughly 30% of the entries) were selected for the award: 5 prizes, 5 HM and 5 Commendations. The question is: which problem got prize, which one got HM.
I think that substantiated answers to this quiz could give some enlightment to the current discussion about FIDE Albums and points.
By the way, I found the level of the tournament excellent, given the problems included in the award. | | (2) Posted by seetharaman kalyan [Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 14:29]; edited by seetharaman kalyan [17-08-23] | Personally I value h#4 much more. The black piece captures in h#3.5 and the twinning reduce its value. Further the unified B1 and B2 moves add unity. The king being mated on the square vacated by white could be a plus point in h#3.5, but even then I prefer h#4. | | (3) Posted by Marcos Roland [Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 14:49]; edited by Marcos Roland [17-08-23] | So do I... Apart from other details, there is something in the 3.5 that some judges would never accept, I think: the very heavy twinning, with the Black king doing a "giant step" from h7 to d6. But other judges seems to see no problem in this. Judgement can have a high dose of subjectivity. | | (4) Posted by Juraj Lörinc [Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 19:15] | You might have come across a small study about judging helpmates I have run a few years ago.
You can try your views on the starting page: http://www.jurajlorinc.com/chess/judtes01.htm
And then read about results on the report page (in case you have tried, you can even compare your approach to the reported results): http://www.jurajlorinc.com/chess/judvys01.htm | | (5) Posted by Marko Klasinc [Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 19:24] | Extended quiz question for those who already saw the award:
Where in the award can be found the participating problem showing mating move by a return of a thematic piece to the thematic square which enriches the theme? Instead of simple delayed Umnov the theme is transformed into more difficult and subtle one: mutual square vacation on a thematic square (which is another definition of this type of Klasinc theme). Thanks to the judge it didn't get even the last commendation and could therefore be published elsewhere. Publication of this joint problem (with my eminent friend Fadil) on this forum doesn't count as original publication.
(= 3+8 )
h#3,5 2 sol
1...Rb8 2.a4 Bb7 3.Kb5 Bc6+ 4.Ka5 Rb5 #
1...Ba8 2.Kd3 Rb7 3.Ke4 Re7+ 4.Kf5 Be4 # | | (6) Posted by Marcos Roland [Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 19:27] | Wonderful, Marko! Thanks for sharing. | | (7) Posted by Marcos Roland [Wednesday, Aug 23, 2017 20:14] | Thank you, Juraj! Very interesting exercise. I printed the diagrams, and I'll try to compare them. You mention there that the task of a judge for FIDE Album is very hard. I would say more: it's an almost impossible, a superhuman task. I remember my countryman Felix Sonnenfeld saying that while he was acting as such a judge he could hardly sleep at night. He would spend hours "dating" the problems he was judging..."So many masterpieces", he used to complain, "how should I rank them"? "May God save my soul..." | | (8) Posted by Wilfried Neef [Thursday, Aug 24, 2017 17:15] | Gentlemen, judging a quick tourney is rather different from normal judging, let me say it is like scalping instead of hair cutting. The judge is allowed a bigger range of subjectivity, but on the other hand he is driven by necessities like appropriate time management. For this reason I decided to limit the selected problems in the award to ~15, after having received all 47 entries.
From the view of quality and art this has proved to be false, but I did it due to economical reasons and at this moment on Friday morning (when I received the last entries) I refused to change it. "De Tied de löppt" (time was running short).
Some more hints to the judgement you may find in the introduction of the award. And the quality of "quick" never copes well to artistry, this is inherent to "quick", not to the judge.
Participating in a quick composing tourney has always a little bit to do with roulette.
So I have to apologize to those, who hoped to find their work in the award with good cause and are disappointed now!
The answer to the "quiz" is much easier: If you prefer originality of a thematic manoeuvre, you should choose the one, if it is beauty, then the other! | | No more posts |
