Construction Workout: The most checkmates in response to a help check
While digging through my documents (again) I found an old idea I know was for here at some point.
Consider this position with Black to move.
 (= 14+6 )
Black has a multitude of help checks that yield a #1. Overall, White has 23 different responses.
Improve that number (Hauke)!

Do not provoke me :P
All 1 to the right, then Bb7->a8, Qc6->b7,
meaning the wQc5 is no longer pinned, meaning two more mates.
Time needed: 1 microsecond
Still, I think you should narrow down the side conditions a bit.
As is, White to move has some #1. I would prefer it if the #1 could
follow ONLY on the help checks, but so there. Likewise, Black has
some checks without a mate. Anyway. Different tasks.

Exactly this I just entered in Popeye/Olive since I was
unable to count the solutions :-) (How can I turn on
numbering the solutions? Anyway, I think counting down
a list I even can do as a mathematician :-), I get 37,
Rewan, eat my shorts, this also was done in five minutes
plus 10 more to fine-tune and dig up how to spell
Ultraschachzwang in Popeye (it's Ultraschachzwang) :P

Retro should be trivial: axb,cxd,exf,gxh, promote at will.
Note that discovered checks might be even more effective!
At the moment, only Rc1/Bc2 gives a few.

EDIT: I didn't check if Sd3/Rd1 instead of Pd3 is retro-OK. 84 or so.
SON OF EDIT: Seems so. Here is a bit more fine tuning. 106 (? :-) solutions.
Can still be improved, I bet.

Retro: Black captures 4x, then all pawns are free to promote.
GRANDSON OF EDIT: 170
 (= 15+11 )
Retro: Black bxa,White hxg, the central pawn block can be promoted by sacrificing bBBSS.

Many white repetitions, as far as I see. What about the original intention to have (as much as possible?) different responses on the checks?
