in the Retros Mailing List we have recently discussed yet another type of Onemovers, which can be described as follows:
Given is a diagram with the stipulation "#1".
After the solver has unsuccessfully tried to find a solution, he at some point realizes, that the given position is illegal.
After the reason for the illegality is removed, the #1 solution shows up easily.
Probably the most famous example is the following, often reprinted problem:
(= 8+10 )
#1
Unfortunately, different books give different sources and authors for that problem, e.g. Problematicus (i.e. Max Weiss), "150 Schachkuriositäten" (Leipzig,1910), attributes it to Hieron. Fischer, while according to V.M.Archakov, "Schachmatnaja Mosaika" (Kiev,1984) it was composed by Sam Loyd.
So my question is: Does anybody know the original source and the correct author of the above problem?
Btw., to make the confusion even more complete, (Brownson's) Chess Journal, Third Series, No.142, Dec.1890, p.4 under the head line "2721. Curiosa", has the following problem:
(= 8+10 )
Remove a P, and mate in one move.
which seems to be a modified version of the aforementioned problem, so the publication date of the former is probably before Dec.1890.
Thanks for any information,
