Kc8 Qh8 Ra1/Ka8 Ra7.
Evidently, the Ra7 guards1 against Kc7#, but he does not guard2
against Qh1#. Not surprisingly, us anal-retentive^W scientifically
precise Germans have two different words for "guard1" and "guard2".
Which I instinctively both translated as "guard", blame it on my
bad English. How is this difference expressed, if at all, in other
languages (English, French, Russian,...)?
Hauke | | (2) Posted by Dan Meinking [Tuesday, Feb 23, 2010 02:39] | I might word it: "Ra7 prevents Kc7#, but not Qh1#". | | (3) Posted by Joost de Heer [Tuesday, Feb 23, 2010 17:54] | Isn't that the difference between guarding and observing? | | (4) Posted by Hauke Reddmann [Wednesday, Feb 24, 2010 11:34] | Yes, that sounds like the right wording.
"Observing" was the term I desperately looked for.
(But note that the German article used
"Deckung" for guard and "Bewachung" for observation,
if I get this right - or do you mean it the other
way around? After all, literally guard=Bewachung.)
