proof game question

Hi Everyone! I have been asked to judge the outstanding 2005-6 Problemist retros and I have started looking at the problems.Has anyone ever composed a shortest proof game(game score) where in the diagram (position after a certain move) the original 4 knights are standing on what appears to be their game array squares(starting positions) but all 4 knights have, in fact swapped places?

Has this been done with four rooks?

Hope you can help!
Eugene

Rooks was done by Unto Heinonen (P0008568). I don't know of a knight example.

Hello Eugene,

The task you mentionned (interchange of the two pairs of Knights) is one of my favourite open problem! A related problem, probably even more complicated, is the double interchange of the same (monocolored) pair of Knights. Paul Raican and I succeded, but in the Circe Cage setting, I'm not aware of another such rendition. I claim it is probably even more complicated as the corresponding problem with Rooks has not been fulfilled yet (to my best knowledge). There is an attempt (by Satoshi Hashimoto if I remember) where Ra1->h1->a1 and Rh1->a1->h1, but without a step where Ra1 stands on h1 and Rh1 stands on a1.

The Hashimoto proofgame Nicolas refers to is P0009164.

boy, that's a lot of moves by the white rooks before they settle down and ultimate swap places!

Another composition in which none of the rooks is original: P1000436

A similar theme is shown in P0005884.
