Fen Words

If you had a language where...

K = L
Q = O
R = R
B = V
S = E
P = *

The fen string for the initial game array would contain the word revolver.
Setting aside whether Sam Loyd knew that... I wonder: are there any other words that fit this pattern?
(partial credit for words which fit a chess960 pattern).

This calls for Captain Regexgrep, but I, GM of wordplay,
would be ashamed if I wouldn't find at least on example
in German.

Reisbier.

(Rice beer. I didn't say "good example" :-)

It's an interesting game, but maybe the scrabble scoring system is better:

1 point – A E I O U L N S T R
2 points – D G
3 points – B C M P
4 points – F H V W Y
5 points – K
8 points – J X
10 points – Q Z

Nepwapen = 15
Revolver = 14
Reisbier = 10
Sleutels = 8 (!) can't get lower than that.

Joost is winning, until Captain Regexgrep enlists ChatGPT. :)

Evincive = 16 (found by Chengarda with help from Qat)
Devolved = 16 (found by Chengarda with help from Qat)
Minyanim = 15 (found by Chengarda with help from Qat)
DRAWCARD = 15 (found by Weather Vane)
Sterlets = 8 (found by Chengarda with help from Qat)

There's a crime movie called "Revolver" directed by Guy Ritchie, who's a chess enthusiast. The film has a lot of chess references, and on its Trivia page on the IMDb site, the first one listed is: "The letters in "revolver" match the arrangement of chess pieces on the first and last rank of the chessboard."

I was not (at least consciously) aware of that, Peter.
On the other hand, it seems a remarkable coincidence that I would arrive at the same word (when we now know there were other choices).
It is entirely possible I was subconsciously aware of this trivia (though it doesn't ring any bell, there is much chess trivia I have forgotten).
On the other hand, this is the kind of trivia I very likely would have committed to a specific location on my hard drive, and I find no such reference -- so, it would seem a coincidence that I came upon the same idea, and found the same word.

I'll definitely check out that movie. Thanks for the reference!

A request on the German language USENET group gave a ton of possibilities,
most of them requiring a story to explain them, alas.*
"Brotkorb" (bread basket) is a very common word, though.

* Since every Internet thread is better with gratituous sex,
"Sexjuxes" (declinated genitive form of "Sexjux", sex prank - do NOT google)
gets a hon. rec. and probably also the current Scrabble top score.

I like 'sleutels' because it's chess composition related.

@Kevin. Sounds like a coincidence since that's hardly a well-known movie; as problemists we know all about coming up with the same idea independently! Anyway, I watched the film a while back and thought it was pretty good though not special.

Hi Peter,

I suspected I must have seen this movie before (and forgotten it).
For one, I watch almost any movie that involves chess.
For two, Jason Statham is the star.
I'm not a huge fan of the actor, or the action genre, but I have found good entertainment value in Statham's lesser known movies (whereas I avoid his franchise products -- Fast & Furious, Expendables, etc -- like a free queen's knight's pawn).

After watching the movie Revolver (yesterday), I can now report, with 100% certainty, that I had never seen this movie before. That's something I would not forget.
I don't know that I'd necessarily recommend this movie, but on an intellectual level I found it very interesting (many of the revelations were too easily spotted, but the core message was worth the price of admission).
I'd like to see director Guy Ritchie make a chess movie (excellent job there). :)

It remains possible that I may have seen somebody refer to this trivia somewhere, but even if so, I had forgotten completely (it took me at least ten minutes searching before I found the word REVOLVER).
It is also quite possible that my finding the word REVOLVER was entirely coincidental (the word REVOLVER is easier to find than DEVOLVED, and these words are much easier to find than the other examples).

Is there an official English or German word list? For Dutch, OnzeTaal (Our Language) maintains a list on github which is updated a few times a year, but I've yet to find an official English or a German equivalent.

Hm ... for german words the scoring system for "german" scrabble should be used:
1 Punkt: E, N, S, I, R, T, U, A, D
2 Punkte: H, G, L, O
3 Punkte: M, B, W, Z
4 Punkte: C, F, K, P
6 Punkte: Ä, J, Ü, V
8 Punkte: Ö, X
10 Punkte: Q, Y

ZIELREIZ - 13
LAUBQUAL - 21 ;)

Is there a chess composer/player/solver/enthusiast (in history) whose name fits this pattern?

Also, do any of these words conform to an actual language abbreviation for the chess pieces?
Here's a list of abbreviations in various languages: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_piece

I searched through a database of ~17000 known chess composers/players/solvers/enthusiasts (admittedly, this is a very incomplete list, but neither is it easy to name a chess personality who is not on this list).
Nearly 2400 have 8 letters in their family name.
I went through every letter of the alphabet looking for a match on first and last letter of their family name.
I found not a single match which fits the REVOLVER pattern.

The closest I found: Grunberg (were it spelled Grunburg, we'd have a match).

Checking given names now...

I found only the name Diarmaid.
