Who could be the youngest chess problem composer whose problem has entered the Album FIDE edition? Is it possible to investigate on the basis of the available data from the Album FIDE who is the youngest composer with a problem in this edition? It has just been announced that a study from our Ilija Serafimović has entered the edition: 1.place 3.YCCC 2018 (Ohrid, 1. sep.2018, https://www.wfcc.ch/wp-content/uploads/3YCCC_booklet.pdf and https://www.wfcc.ch/fide-albums/fa1618sl/fa1618d/). Ilija was born on July 3th 2004. It means that the problem was published in the Award and later it has entered the Album FIDE when he was only 14 years and 2 months old. It is generally known that some of the great masters published their top achievements at an early age, like for example Lev Loshinski when he was 17 years old. This is given only as an example to illustrate that this information is not so difficult to check. Can anyone prove that Ilija is not the youngest composer in the history of problem chess whose problem has been published in the Album FIDE edition? |

In principle this should be easily possible: Take the current list of fide album points, search each composer's birth date (e.g. in the chess composers database) and go through the fide albums to look for his first apperance in them. But the amount of work would be, well, you know... Off the top of my head the only contender that came to my mind was HPR, a quick pdb search brought up P1038432 (with him being around 16 years old at the time of publication), but this need not be his first appearance in the Fide albums. Maybe more experienced problemists than me can come up with other candidates? |

HPR is a good candidate for this nomination. His two problems that entered Album FIDE (1956-1958) had been published in 1957 at his age of 15. More about HPR everyone can see here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Peter_Rehm |

In H+P+R=S he writes that the aforementioned problem is probably the only one built by a 13-year old to get in to FA (P1038432). |

Right : it is a 5#. And the other HPR problem of this album is here, of course a little tinkered because it is on a 9x9 board !
http://lecoursdumaitre.e-monsite.com/pages/tools/cb-2019/py-20191001.html (see the 2nd diagram)
Please add file "i" & 9th rank. Click on the right part of the board to see the moves walk and adjust moves of the Zebra-rider : 2nd, 4th & 6th. |

Uri Avner , born 1941, has a problem in the 1945-55 Album. |

The Avner is this https://www.yacpdb.org/#178745
So at the time of publishing he was younger than Rehm. |

Rehm's problem (here for easier reference https://www.yacpdb.org/#97709) clearly won a formal tournament, the results are already reported in Schach-Echo 20/1958. The three-move section was won by Visserman; 338 problems by 207 authors. |

I have another challenge for Branislav. Who is the oldest composer whose problem or study has entered the Album (of course for the 1st time). Seems I could be a candidate ! |

Hallo Alain,
in which year was published your study from AF 2016-2018? Candidate to beat you is Jaroslav Brada (born 1925), his first and only entry in AF is from 1997. |

Yes Michal, he won, because mine is from 2016. And I like very much his "bohemian" 4# of 1997. But it is not fair (!!) because his 3# from 1985 (Kb6/ Kh5 with 5 model mates) should have been in the album ! Anyway, for once I feel like I’m young ! |

Unrelated: Who could be the youngest active person on this forum? :-) |

We could issue a MPF Boasting Contest :-)
(Stipulation: Make some statement "I am the X-iest member on MPF",
where X is a property only limited by your creativity.
Eat humble pie when another member out-tasks you.)
I try my luck with "Oldest Student", ~60 :-) |

Uri Avner was born on 13th January 1941 (see: https://juliasfairies.com/uri-avner-13011941-10062014/) and his first problem from Album FIDE had been published in November 1955 according to WinChloe database (2472, Probleemblad 13/6 (nov. 55), 1836 p.348, Album FIDE 1945-55). So, Ilija Serafimović stays as the youngest composer ever whose problem, actually study, is in the Album FIDE. |

If Ilija can get a problem published before March 2020 into the next Album he'll beat Uri's record for the youngest composer to have TWO problems in the Albums!
Seriously though, let's hope that Ilija reaches the same heights as a composer that Uri did. He has certainly impressed so far. |

Seriously though, I would like someone to ask Hans Peter about that problem of his. Did he compose it as a thirteen year old, as he states. I will take his word on it. |

How do we know that Uri or Ilija didn't compose their problems when they were 13?
In such matters don't you have to go by publication date? |

Of course you do. We could have asked Uri. Whether the matter is of any interest is up to each to decide. For me in some analogous situations it is, e.g. at which age did Kafka write his posthumously published texts. |

Records are bound to be surpassed eventually: The 1st Place study in YCCC 2019 by Christopher Yoo (from US, born on 19-XII-2006), was selected in the 2019-21 album.
Closing date of YCCC was 20-VII-2019, so Christopher was 12 years and 7 months old when he submitted it to the tourney.

If there had been a FIDE album in the 19th century, Lilian Baird would probably win the title. |
