I'm not sure if you confuse Hauke and me (his last glider is 1.b7+, 2.b8Q+, 3.Qb6 mate), but I think we should make a separate thread.

I prepare a small memorial contest. I write to my contacts, possibly ChessBase might be interested to host it. So if anyone wants to judge glider problems, let me know at sh-schach check gmx chess eu. Replace "check" with @ and "chess" with .

@Siegfried: Joost is right, think retro. Separate thread: seconded.
Judge: being half of a mathematician, I would take the job of the
judge, if noone else is interested. In that case, I'd keep my
example for a moving glider I quickly made up for myself.

Yves Tallec (9/12/1927 - 04/2020) died in hospital after Covid-19 infection.
He was for many years President of AFCE (French Problemists Association), after founder Jean Zeller and before present Axel Gilbert.
He was still very active, corresponding with many people, editing selfmates and writing articles in magazine Phénix, judging tourneys, organizing helpmate tourneys in RIFACE (French Problemists Meeting)...
French problem community is very sad.
Rest in Peace.

This is a huge loss for the World Chess composition! Yves was a wonderful author, editor, judge, and functionary. I knew him personally and always admired his exceptional intelligence and kindness. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Yves family as well as to all my friends - French composers. Rest in Peace.

I was really saddened to learn of this news. I did not get a better impression of anyone else I corresponded with than him. And nowhere did I send more of my selfmates than to his Phenix. The sad news also surprised me because I recently corresponded with him and sent him two of my originals.
Rest to his soul and rest in peace.

M.Parthasarathy

Indian composer Mukkur Parthasarathy has passed away in Pune, India, on 3-Jan-2020. He was 91.
Parthasarathy was active in the 60s and 70s, and then, after a 20 year gap, again in the 90s.
His style of orthodox 2-mover composition, combining traditional motifs with modern changed play, inspired other Indian composers like C.G.S.Narayanan.
He was the winner of the Brian Harley award, more than once.
He acted as President of the short lived Indian Chess Problem Society in the 90s and was also the editor of it's publication "Cross Check".
Trained as a mathematician, Parthasarathy served in the Indian audit and accounts service, rising to the level of Deputy Auditor General, before his retirement around 1990.
His wife, Rukmini Parthasarathy, who passed away some years before, was a prominent writer in Tamil.

For most of us he was a legend who excelled in task achievements and winner of several awards. We were priveleged to have met him and known him. Sad day for Indian Problemists

We heard the following from his son :

"If it’s any consolation, he enjoyed good health right to the end, and just went away peacefully one night in his sleep."

Big loss ...RIP

Great composer, great promoter of Asian chess composition. The word Legend, sounds appropriate.
I remember Barry Barnes once introduced his comeback, with something like "the man who was steeling my Prizes in 60-es..."
My condolences to all Indian friends and the family of Mr. Parthasarathy.

Michael,

Thanks for posting the information about Don Smedley. I'm very sorry to hear it. Paul Littlewood reposted in Facebook an affectionate bridge obituary by John Griffin, available here: https://www.bridgewebs.com/derbyshire/

Don also composed double dummy bridge problems, see here for some: http://www.doubledummy.net/by_composer.html#Smedley

On 28 December, Günther Weeth died at the age of 85.
He was one of Germany's greatest retro experts (with Dittmann, Keym, Brand), and I have met him quite a few times.

Yoav Ben-Zvi (Jerusalem) was also a retro expert, who died on 31 December 2020, at the age of 63.
