Consecutive promotions when enforcing stalemate I recently found a nice problem by Mr. Kirtley: https://www.yacpdb.org/#92131
Mark Kirtley
U.S. Problem Bulletin, 1992
=8
(= 13+7 )
8 knight promotions in a row to enforce a stalemate is a record fulfilled of course. But what about for other promotions? I don't know of the right stipulation to search for over at Schwalbe (YACPBD didn't really give anything), so I decided to try to see how far I could go on my own.
=6
(= 8+6 )
This one shouldn't be cooked, and 6 rook promotions in a row was fairly easy.
=4-Cooked?
(= 9+5 )
Bishops promotions are harder, but I managed three in the main line.
=5-Definitely Cooked
(= 8+2 )
Queens are hard to control, so this is probably cooked. But if correct, 4 in a row is not bad.
What are the actual records though? |

The =6 is cooked by sudden stalemate in the 5th move:
1. a8=R+ Kb7 2. cxb8=R+ Kc7 3. dxc8=R+ Kd7 4. exd8=R+ Ke7 5. fxe8=B = !!
The =4 is cooked:
1. fxg8=R+ Kh7 2. Rxg7+ Kh8 3. Qxb7
or
1. fxg8=B+ Rf7 2. Qxe7 Sa5 3. Qb4
The =5 is cooked in 4 moves:
1. a8=Q+ Kb6 2. b8=Q+ Kb5 3. Qa4 |

Thanks Olaf.
7 rooks is easy enough with a couple of promoted knights.
=8
(= 10+8 )
A piece to capture should fix this.
=5
(= 8+3 )
The queen was too powrful of course. Replacing it should suffice.
=4
(= 10+5 )

7 rooks is not easy. The cook has only two rooks:
1. a8=R+ Kb7 2. cxb8=R+ Kc7 3. exd8=Q+ Kxd8 4. dxc8=Q+ Ke7 5. gxf8=Q+ Kxf8 6. fxe8=Q+ Kg7 7. Qg6+ Kh8 8. Sxh3=
The =5 has 6 solutions, for exampple
1. a8=R+ Kb6/Kxb7 2. exf8=Q ...
The =4 has 6 duals, for example
1. fxg8=B+ Rf7 2. Ba1 ... |

James Malcom - Why do you not test positions before you post them? The software (Popeye, Fancy, Teddy) is all downloadable. |

I know it exists, I'm just ill-knowing about how to use the stuff. I have downloaded Olive, but all I can ever get to is a sea of random files and folders. |

Download Popeye and the Teddy front end. They come with instructions. |
