World Championship - Solving competitions

The eagerly (in India) awaited Championship between Anand & Carlson is inaugurated today. First time the highest chess match is being held in India. Our best wishes to Vishy Anand for great play and victory !

Good news is that our star composer, C.G.S.Narayanan will be conducting Solving Tourneys on all match days in the evenings in the same venue (of course in a different room!) There will be good prize money but no entry fee, and all visitors are allowed to participate!

Will there be TV reports of that ? Or at least videos for this solving competitions ?

Good luck for everybody !

A special point in this championship is that both players are well supported and loved by the chess world

@Jacques: Which is too bad. For teh lulz, at least one player should

The solving tourneys are not rated. India has no rated solvers. So it will be a friendly contest and CGSN will be selecting the problems (not originals I think) with a view to popularise solving among players. I will try to get at least a short video. If there is enough participation and interest we are planning short lectures on problems and themes everyday.

Here are some links to the press coverage of the inauguration.

Peter Leko as his second is a nice choice by Anand.

A nice video of the inauguration is at the Chessdom site. Lot of speeches in Tamil, the local language, followed by a repetition in English. Dont miss the cultural programs especially that of the dance troupe of Norway (at 16.30 in the video)

I am happy for all Indian chess friends about this great tourney. Hope we will see a great match!

Ram, when the World Chess Championship Match against Anand and Topalov was held in Bulgaria in 2010 we organized a solving tourney in the official site. There was more than 140 participants from all over the world. The problems was specially composed twomovers by me with the pieces on the diagram writing the names of the players ANAND and TOPALOV. Well, now Anand is again participant, so look again his dedicated twomovers - click here: http://prntscr.com/22npkt

By the way - these twomovers attract a lot of attention and the Bulgarian national TV make report and interview with me about that. The twomovers was also published in the book dedicated to the match. So such matches are good time to popularize our art and I wish you good luck!

Well... it has been more than friendly Solving competition so far. The event was almost casual. The organisers were unable to provide a separate hall or room for the event, so we had to make do with the spacious Lounge and the Chaotic atmosphere ! There were on average about 50 solvers each day, many of them youngsters. Two young IMs were regulars and walked away with the top prizes. Here is a photo of the Solving Zone !

Narayanan and I (back to the camera) are sitting in the foreground, in front of the round table, registering Solvers for Day 3. Hope to post better pictures afterwards.

Sorry. It seems the URL I gave opens the whole gallery. Hope this will be the correct one.

As you can see, it is no place for serious solving :). But the solvers coped, many kids sitting on the floor !

That is nice! Some other TV channels also got curious and wanted to know what is going on. Narayanan has spoke to some of them. We are also trying to see if during the Live coverage one or two of these problems for solving can be highlighted.

What is not nice is Anand lost two games in a row. It will be miracle if he can recover. :(

Here is a short article on C.G.S.Narayanan in one of the leading newspapers of South India (Deccan Chronicle). This was published two months ago.

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/130919/sports-other-sports/article/narayanan-carves-niche-chess-problem-solving

The Chess solving tourneys conducted during all the ten match-days were popular and attracted many entries including three/four IMs everyday. It was a pleasure to interact with the solvers and get their feedback. For want of seating arrangements we had to reject many last minute participants. Hope this will result in more activity in problem solving and new composers from India in the future.

Congratulations! This was an awesome idea, and the chessbase report is a nice advertisement. For the future, I suggest the ISC in India. The good thing about ISC is that it can be organized simultaneously in different cities. It may be a good opportunity for the strongest local solvers to compare their results with the top solvers from other countries, and for the youngest, to have another solving experience with easier problems in section B.

By the way, Feather's problem must be helpmate in two (not in three).

Thanks Marjan and Kostas. The daily solving events were a pleasant though hectic experience. It was possible thanks to Narayanan being active in our All India chess Federation (he is the Editor of their monthly journal) and also because the present Secretary of the Federation Mr. V.Hariharan is also a keen solver. The report by Chessbase website, nicely presented by Mr.Frederic Friedel is very good. We had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with him during the match.

Yes Kostas, we have registered for the ISC. Unfortunately our Problem Society being dormant it is unlikely to be held in other cities of India except Chennai. Hoping it might happen in Bangalore also where Mr.Shankarram resides now.
