Keeping the bK at e5 throughout keeps the flights the same. With the same mates, the 4x4 super complete Lacny is achieved solely by the clever twinning and flexible symmetry of the position. A beautiful tribute Peter. Milan surely would've smiled....

Milan!
It is not easy for me to speak of you in the past tense.
You were a great talent and a daring composer who always challenged our frontiers, but more than that - you were also a true friend. The deep and humorous conversations into the night we had on several occasions are among my most treasured memories. The cooperation we had about parts of your new book “Themes and Terms” will always be a unique experience to me. Who could imagine it was going to be your last book?
The world of chess composition will never be the same any more.
Farewell my friend!
Uri

When Milan became grandmaster and I congratulated him, he replied this (mail of 10/23/2010 2:12 AM). I hope he would be okay with me sharing it:

Thank you! Anyway, I think that my greatest achievments are about 120 issues of magazines (MAT, MP and MP+MPR), as well as 5-6 books. Let alone my chess composition "students" like Marjan Kovacevic and Dragan Stojnic (to mention the brightest stars). I was just a part-time composer, but in over 40 years even we can collect enough points for title :-) Regards, Milan

I had the privilege to be part of Milan's team when he directed the WCSC in both Jurmala & Jesi.
Needless to say it was marvellous to be able to spend so much time with him, but there is one occasion in particular which is stamped in my memory.

It was in Jurmala and as usual we were the last ones drinking late in the night on the hotel terrace, accompanied by finnish solvers Kari Karhunen & Terho Marlo.
Everything was going nicely when suddenly a chess board appeared and a problem was set up.
I was astonished when Milan's demeanor switched from jolly drinking companion to serious solving mode, fully focused on the board and of course seeing everything.

I took the opportunity to quiz him about something that had been bothering me: "So how do you go about making these very complex two-movers such as Lacnys? The books say you should start with some simple idea and build up from it, but how is this possible with these complex cyclic schemes?"
Milan replied that he didn't build up his problems but that he simply put down the pieces on to the board!
Then he went on to say that he could always tell whether a problem had been 'built up' or 'put down'.

All this left a very deep impression on me, implying as it did that he'd already got the mechanisms worked out in his head even before taking the pieces out of the box.
And so I learnt that in composition, there are those that build up and those that put down their schemes.
While being in awe of the latter group, it saddened me to think that I would always be in the former.

Since Milan, Christopher Jones and myself were born in the same month -April 1952, some 3 years ago (possibly in Jurmala) I proposed to celebrate our 60th anniversary in one composing tourney with 3 different sections. Milan was not that enthusiastic about it. If at all, he said, I'd rather have one when I am 64...
I hope we will remember that when the time comes or even earlier.

Neal-
I couldn't concur more!! But I'm realizing more and more lately how important it is to at least try to set up an idea in your brain as much as possible before putting the pieces down.

Once, we talked about music and he liked swing music.

EDIT: Here is (a different version of) a song he particularly liked:

milan came to the marianka festival in 2011, if i remember well.
as usually, every evening there was projection of a movie. one of them was the "hard day's night" with the beatles. in a moment it was clear milan loved them!
pity that i did not speak with him more about the sixties rock music - the rolling stones is my favorite band as well...

Just visited the site today after a long time and was shocked to learn Milan is no longer with us. We all owe him a lot for all he has done for the chess problem community. We all miss Milan and will remember him as one of the greatest chess problem personality ever.

Milan, thank you for all your chess problems, magazines and all other contributions that influenced many of us today and are yet to influence future chess problem enthusiasts. I will especially remember your smile and witty personality. It was a pleasure to know you! Rest in Peace.

Open letter to Kari Valtonen
Dear Kari,
Having close relation with Milan as co-author of the Encyclopedia of Chess Problems several months before his death, I can understand how you must feel.
Milan always told me how important your contribution was. It is clear to me that the project could not have realized and the Encyclopedia could not be ready without you.
For this, the world of chess composition owes you a great debt.
Best wishes,
Uri Avner

Dear Mr. Avner,

Thank you for your open letter, which you sent over a week ago. I regret the delay in my reply. I was grateful and embarrased for the thanks coming from the top of our problemists' community. I was also glad to hear in your words Milan talking from "beyond the grave". He repeatedly encouraged me during the project, and he also valued your contribution in the later stages of our work. We all miss the great man.

Milan intended to publish later an on-line version of the ECP, much extended and ever-growing. That was, in fact, his ultimate goal, the ECP was just a preliminary stepping-stone towards his big dream. Late in 2012 he also took up the idea of us producing an "Errata List" for the readers of the paper version of the ECP, to be downloaded from MatPlus site. Sadly, the illness took over and smashed many dreams.

For the time being, I am working on a "Supplement to the ECP", a kind of combination of an on-line extention and an errata list (including typos, spelling mistakes, incorrect problems with possible corrections, diagram errors, new entries and complementary texts to the old ones, etc.). Without Milan's back-up, expertize and advice, the work proceeds agonizingly slow, but I feel obliged to complete it soonest possible.

Best wishes,
Kari Valtonen

P.S. My intention was to publish this letter on MatPlus Forum, right after your letter, but I don't know if there was space left, or did the page end right at that point. I'm completely hopeless with computers! Please, I urge you to copy this letter of mine on Forum to be read by everyone.
