14th ECSC in Moscow 4-6 May 2018

As announced on the WFCC website in October, an official information was to be published in December 2017.
Does anybody know some news (schedule, director, etc)?

This seems to be the most recent info, where the official invitation is announced for December...

These are the latest pieces of information that I got on February 9:

1. Andrey Selivanov will not be the ECSC organiser. The organiser will be the Russian Chess Federation.

2. ECSC will not be held in Moscow. It will be held in Sochi in the same venue where the Russian chess team championship will take place. Web site of the hotel is http://www.zhem.ru/ It is possible to reach Sochi via Moscow or Istanbul.

3. ECSC director will be Georgy Evseev.

4. RCF informed that the tentative prices will be 75 EUR/day single room, 60 EUR/day double/triple room. Includes: full-board (traditional European breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner), wi-fi, access to swimming pool, all taxes. There will be no registration fee. These prices will be valid for the period of May 2nd - May 11th. Visa support can also be provided.

5. The official invitation and the mechanics of registration will be made ready as soon as possible. RCF promised that they will inform me around 15-16 of February, when they will be ready with the official announcement/invitation.

During the last 24 hours, I was waiting for explanations or comments about the mysterious information No.1 and No.2.
Nobody has been willing to comment or explain, but the indirect explanation was found in the following article about RCF election, written by the brave chess journalist Evgeny Surov (http://www.chess-news.ru/node/24287).
As I understood it, Andrey Selivanov was punished by the new RCF Presidium (elected 3. February 2018), for his critics during the pre-election period.
Then, instead of supporting 14. ECSC, the new Presidium of the RCF decided to organize ECSC themselves (??) ... And to move it to Sochi 3 months before the start ... And to change the prices ... And to let us waiting for the coming details ...
Dont know about other WFCC delegates, but I ask myself if our votes in Dresden (and the whole WFCC as an institution), have any credibility to oppose the humiliating treatment of potential host?
1. Did we vote for Kaliningrad, Moscow or Sochi?
2. Were guarantees in Dresden made by Andrey Selivanov, or by RCF?
3. Do we need ECSC at any price?
4. Have you already reserved your flights to Moscow, or the hotels in Moscow?

marjan,
you should wait another 24 hours before buying the air tickets to sochi.
it may well happen that the ecsc will be moved to nakhodka...
(what a beautiful chess composition expression!)

Till now, I've heard only one explanation for moving to Sochi: the whole leadership of RCF will be in Sochi, 1-11. May ... to give the cups?
I see two possible solutions, either to insist on staying in Moscow, or to give 14th ECSC to another country.

I do not speak Russian. So I am wondering is there any meaning in the name "Nakhodka"? Or you just selected this city because it's far away on the eastern coast of Russia (next to Vladivostok)?

I remember to ECSC 2009 was moved from Belgrade to Subotica too...

"Nakhodka" literally means "the find", in the sense "a position that looks like found, not composed".

I see the point of Peter's joke precisely in the fact that this is city that is in the far East as well as composing term.

But now... explaining jokes deserves punishment, I am guilty, so please, excuse me :)

misha,

well, russian speaking…
there was another joke in the former (communist) czechoslovakia.
a man is sinking in the river and calling for help.
a guy is walking on the bank, and asks the man:
"did you learn russian?"
"yes, of course, i did!"
"you should learn swimming instead…"

juraj, perhaps you could explain also this joke…

The transfer of the championship to Sochi is a surprise for me. I arranged with the hotel Cosmos in Moscow and prepared good conditions. RCF but I was told that will perform this season. The Russian chess Federation was planning to hold in Moscow and it was in the calendar of the Russian chess Federation. But now I'm not a Vice-President of the Russian chess Federation and cannot influence the decisions of the RCF. I myself do not plan to go to Sochi. I apologize to all who are uncomfortable.

Questions have been asked in message 5, but answers haven't been given. It seemed to me that persons are banned immediately here for their inconvenient questions.

Peter, one misdemeanour could be pardoned, two would be an issue. So I leave this explanation to you :)

@Peter and Juraj,

I think that this one is self-explanatory. You both never learned swimming since you learned Russian! You should think twice before you decide to attend WCCC meeting in Ohrid this year - there is a big lake there :)!

Knowing Russian and also swimming quite well, I feel more than surprised reading this.. Seems like the essence of the topic was forgotten or purposely hidden with most of replies. Maybe I'm not interested enough in the politics to understand or accept this, but is there any rule that bigger or more powerful countries are allowed to be out of the rules?
It reminds me the wonderful phrase "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others".
We voted for Kaliningrad in Dresden, in the autumn Kaliningrad is quietly replaced with Moscow, promised invitation doesn't appear at all, but nobody cares, now we seem to be invited to Sochi, still with no official invitation. But one thing looks to be clear: ECSC will not be held in Moscow. Then why no information on the official website, in the forum only?! While some people might be already looking for flight tickets, visas... but nobody seems to be responsible.
Being the webmaster of wfcc.ch I know many cases about quite a lot of pushing from Russia to make some information published as soon as possible... But here, when it scares many people involved, all responsible persons just disappeared suddenly.
I believe, at least it would be fair to announce the cancellation of ECSC in Moscow and maybe some comments about the legality of such changes? Plus, a new deadline for another announcement/invitation.

@David: Isn't Marjan a Mod? A Mod banning himself...I've seen everything
on the Internet, but that must be a novelty. (After Googling: It isn't.)

This thread is full of win...for the lucky uninvolved. :-/

My wrong assumption was that many solvers, especially from Western countries, wouldn’t so quietly accept the second change of the venue, causing 2 times more expensive flights. After all, we understood the migration of ECSC wasn’t much more than a RCF caprice, relying on acceptance by the WFCC.
If nobody else cares, or dares to comment, let me put some less tensed questions about future reactions to such unprecedented cases.
Should delegates be informed and consulted? Should WFCC accept whatever offered, without bargaining? Should we insist on having at least 2 bids for every competition, and rely on reserve?
