@Hauke
I could get a R3(14) with no promotion, but only in 12 pieces

Isn't it K5(4)?
5 moves, 4 different mates?

yes, you can write it as you want
I began with the number of mates but you can begin by number of moves given to the black thematic piece

@Jacques: I assume you have the same position :-)

(= 10+2 )

And thanks for the find. (Not in the Albrecht) I already
suspected the fifth mate would fit into the matrix.

R 14(4), but again with the (felt) dual:
(= 9+2 )

Obligatory promotion orgy R14(5), but with a tiny dual on
...Rh2 and I can't get the %&$ out:

(= 11+3 )

(EDIT: Best I can get w/o promo or dual is R13(5):
(= 9+2 )

Oh, right, the rook may not end up higher than the bishop... :-/
OK, next try to increase variants goes to you :-)

Oohh, #69. (-:

Hey James, aren't you too young to...know the Rubettes?
Most epic "Truckdrivers Gear Change" ever @1:53 :-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXtsuVjjAD4

BTW, that sorta cries for a few theme tourneys for moremovers!

#42 Must answer everything. Pricewinner gets a fresh towel.
#23 Solution must be secret. Pricewinner gets Novichok-ed!
#4711 Problem must stink. Pricewinner gets a free shower.
#137 Author must be physicist. Pricewinner gets a DESY tour.

Thanks for the wonderful new music Hauke! And no, I hadn't known of "The Rubettes" before. Too young, as you said. :-)

And for tourney's with odd themes, I genuinely want a dummy pawn tourney-this upcoming Christmas would be nice-as to see it applied to modern day composing by modern composers and themes and such. Other than myself, of course.

Note that Shinkman unstalemates four men.
I'm not that willing to check all 171 entries
of the Albrecht (unstalemate+unpin -
I have no idea how to further restrict,
a pessimistic matrix search gave nothing)
and thus boldly claim this is new :-)

(= 8+10 )

Feel free to let me eat my words or improve.

Note added in wordeating:

(= 9+13 )

7 unstalemated men (2 vars). I hope nobody
takes offense at the sB.

comment to #73. I looked at the previous diagrams and thought I knew what is going on but this one appears to invalidate that. Why is there a black pawn on h6? Disables Bf2-e3-g5 and Qa3-c1-g5 (the latter to release a black pawn on a4 which is not yet there).

On a separate note. The diagram also suggest an e.p. release which is commonly unjustified. Am I missing something?

Confused I am, young Jedi. #73 is a perfectly normal
#2 with solution Bd4, and without Ph6 Be3 is a cook.
Improvement on last diagram:

(= 8+12 )

Here's one for Jacques:

(= 9+7 )

Also 20 variants (see very early post). All my bag of tricks failed - IF 21 THEN cooked.

You read it here first: PDB will be offering a "records page" feature very very soon. Gerd will post the first such page in a few days, when the next issue of Die Schwalbe comes out. The idea is that for a page covering a particular area, one skilled volunteer will manage the HTML content, and periodically send a file to Gerd to post. I think this thread offers a great bunch of new content which deserves to be showcased in that format.

@Andrew: About time! (Guess which book is lying
on my desk at the moment again, hint: begins
with Sir Jeremy and ends with Morse) This would
save so much time for componists. The Gik and
the Bonsdorff could be plundered first.
I think what needs most brain grease is developing
a decent classification system.
