PS, June 19: MV's old website also appears in the serbian Wikipedia, not only in the great search engine Moloch.

No, it is not relevant. I also tested in the PC @ the office, where I have not installed the updates yet, and it occurs there too.

All the characters entered after the mentioned problems with server are correct, so it's not the "quilt" of browsers.

Saturday June 16, 10:30 CET : the automatic re-direction link works ok, but if you click on the url it goes to www.matplus.net/pub/start.php (with an unpleasant 404), instead of www.milanvel.net/pub/start.php

dns returns to me 77.105.136.xxx for both, too, but this site is 136 and sezampro.yu is 5

but you're right, it's not a "new" server:

As you can see, we're on the new hosting server now*. We made a beta test and found one or two other bugs nobody noticed until then but if you still find bugs please report to MiVel(at)sezampro.yu or per note to mivel or admin.

Known bug: http://www.matplus.net/pub/diaghelp.php is missing (when you click on the question mark below, no text appears). This bug has not existed in the beta version so we apologize for it. It should be sorted soon. (fixed, see Administrator's post below)

Some things you should know of:
Finally the 45, 135, 225 and 315 degree symbols for pieces were included (look diagram), also for missing pieces a question mark appears.

Below you see (in first row) an example for possible figure symbols (0, 90, 180, 270, 45, 135, 225, 315 degrees), then an empty row, then all standard symbols from A to Z. In diagram 2 you see all advances symbols from A to Z
(note: N is not a legal symbol for knight, see Administrator's post below)

Code for advanced symbols: (-A)(-B)(-C) etc
Code for rotating: (A)(A1)(A2)(A3) - 0 90 180 360
Code for rotating: (A4)(A5)(A6)(A7) - 45 135 225 315

(= 15+19 )

(= 0+26 )

Advanced symbols (note: the N-star doesn't work as figurine, only in diagram):
= (-B)
= (-E) (Equihopper)
= (-F)
= (-N)
= (-O)
= (-R)
= (-S)
= (-T)
= (-X)

Any suggestion on the use of the symbols is welcome. As always, figurines are mady by (in one line):
two brackets [
equal =
code (A)
two brackets ]

(A) marks a piece symbol, you can use (S) or (Q) or whatever you like.

* = Of course this is MiVel's website, but I like more to write "our" etc

A problem with help on diagram entry is now fixed - thanks Siegfried.

A new diagram drawing method is used throughout the site: each diagram is now a single PNG image (oposed for mozaic of images). Members can select the diagram appearance and size they prefer (Profile...Change diagram style...).

Regarding the usage of non-orthodox pieces and symbols, it would be nice if the PCCC for change does something useful and agrees about the standard... if only the never ending discussion about titles and FIDE Album points would not take all the time :((

Following figurines are available, provided that default set is set as your preference (in fact, only in good_comp style some of them are missing):

(K)(k)(!k)(Q)(q)(!q)(R)(r)(!r)(B)(b)(!b)(S)(s)(!s)(P)(p)(!p)
(= 6+6+6N )

(K1)(k1)(!k1)(Q1)(q1)(!q1)(R1)(r1)(!r1)(B1)(b1)(!b1)(S1)(s1)(!s1)(P1)(p1)(!p1)
(= 6+6+6N )

(K2)(k2)(!k2)(Q2)(q2)(!q2)(R2)(r2)(!r2)(B2)(b2)(!b2)(S2)(s2)(!s2)(P2)(p2)(!p2)
(= 6+6+6N )

(K3)(k3)(!k3)(Q3)(q3)(!q3)(R3)(r3)(!r3)(B3)(b3)(!b3)(S3)(s3)(!s3)(P3)(p3)(!p3)
(= 6+6+6N )

(-E)(-e)(!-e)(-E1)(-e1)(!-e1)(-O)(-o)(!-o)(-X)(-x)(!-x)
(= 0+8+4N )

(-S)(-s)(!-s)(-F)(-f)(!-f)(-T)(-t)(!-t)(-R)(-r)(!-r)
(= 0+8+4N )

(-B)(-b)(!-b)(-BQ)(-bq)(!-bq)(-BR)(-br)(!-br)(-BB)(-bb)(!-bb)(-BS)(-bs)(!-bs)(-BP)(-bp)(!-bp)
(= 0+12+6N )

(K4)(k4)(!k4)(K5)(k5)(!k5)(K6)(k6)(!k6)(K7)(k7)(!k7)
(= 4+4+4N )

(Q4)(q4)(!q4)(Q5)(q5)(!q5)(Q6)(q6)(!q6)(Q7)(q7)(!q7)
(= 4+4+4N )

(R4)(r4)(!r4)(R5)(r5)(!r5)(R6)(r6)(!r6)(R7)(r7)(!r7)
(= 4+4+4N )

(B4)(b4)(!b4)(B5)(b5)(!b5)(B6)(b6)(!b6)(B7)(b7)(!b7)
(= 4+4+4N )

(S4)(s4)(!s4)(S5)(s5)(!s5)(S6)(s6)(!s6)(S7)(s7)(!s7)
(= 4+4+4N )

(P4)(p4)(!p4)(P5)(p5)(!p5)(P6)(p6)(!p6)(P7)(p7)(!p7)
(= 4+4+4N )

As we can see, 'N' is not legal symbol - use 'S' instead!

I'm missing the automatic pieces count under the diagrams, this was very useful, why did you give it up?

I omitted it because of my laziness - had to remove the old javascripts from several pages (which was easy) and to replace them with new code (not so easy!). I did it now, hopefully with no side effects... but I'll leave the blue top bar where it is for a few days more because of it.

In the diagram creation utility, after right-clicking on the image in Firefox and choosing Save Image As, the dialog box asks to save it as PHP script. Renaming it to .png works fine, of course.

In fact, it asks to save image as file "i.php.png" (I have Firefox 2.0). I changed it: now it should offer a (unique?) generated name.

MiVel has added a beta (?) version of the database he worked on hard in the last time (fur subscribers only?).

If you find bugs, please tell!

I was informed it may take some time until the database program will be back. There are some legal issues to be solved (see http://www.milanvel.net/mpdbs/suspend.php). You shouldn't expect it in the next few days (as stated) but in some days. Personally, I guess, it may take one to two weeks (but there's no official statement on this, it could be even this week).

At the moment preparations for Autumn issue are done. I guess it'll come out soon.

Ok, I hope it's allowed to give out this information. :-)

Best regards,
Siegfried Hornecker

This will be a tricky issue.

I think you all will agree that a list of the first 80000000
primes is not copyrightable.
I think you all will agree that a list of the addresses of 80000000
Germans IS copyrightable.
In both cases the information as such is public domain.

So, where is the dividing line?

That is because there is no artistic creation or selection involved.
A list of 'my favourite 80 million primes' would very probably be
protected by copyright.

>I think you all will agree that a list of the addresses of 80000000
>Germans IS copyrightable.

No, I don't agree. There's not information enough to decide.

If there is some kind of selection involved (as in 'my favourite 80
million Germans and their addresses'), it will be: not two people would produce the same
lists as there are around 82 million inhabitants in Germany. Thus,
we have reasonable evidence that there would be creative work involved
in producing a 'favourite' list.

However, if we take those 80 million to represent the entire
population of Germany, there can't be copyright protection: there can
be no ordinary copyright to complete lists, unless the lists themselves
are creative works of art or literature, and that is presumably not the
case here. (However, if the list was given some particular form, that
form could possibly be protected, even if the actual contents
wouldn't be.)

There is, in some countries, such a thing as catalogue copyright. It
gives a much shorter protection for matters that
can't be protected by 'ordinary' copyright -- such as lists or catalogues.
It's more in the nature of 'sweat of the brow' protection. But such protection
could, in the countries where it is available, be probably invoked for both lists:
both the prime numbers and the German addresses.

> So, where is the dividing line?

Exactly where copyright legislation puts it: copyright protects literary and
artistic works. This is according to the Berne Convention.

There are some technicalities to take into consideration, of course: is
the work fixed in a tangible medium, is the author a national of a country
subject to the law in question, etc. etc. But the central question is always
if the work in question is a literary or artistic work, and that, in turn,
usually boils down to a question if the work is creative enough.
