Solving Tourneys Database

After some tests in the past years I can finally present a first version of STD (Solving Tourneys Database). It’s a database with problems and studies which were used in solving tourneys.

At the moment there are ca. 5000 problems/studies from ca. 400 tourneys. The big international tourneys (WCSC, WCCC-OPEN, ECSC, ISC) are all covered. Some countries are also complete (Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece) or almost complete (Great Britain, Germany). But from several countries I still miss a lot of championships (Israel, Russia, Ukraine, and most of the countries in Central Europe). I hope that in the future the solvers or directors who have information about these missing tourneys could provide me with the problems.

You can download the database from www.horizon.ebbs.be (go to "Database"). This is part of the website of the Correspondence Chess organisation from Belgium. By the way, you can also download at the same place Horizon, which is the newsletter from the Belgium Problem Club.

STD is a pgn-file which can be read by all the important chess programs and databases (ChessBase, Chess Assistant, Fritz, Rybka, etc. If you don’t have one of these programs, you can still download for free the ChessBase Reader). There is also a pdf-document with the details of all the solving tourneys.

There is a date in the title of the pgn-file. With the date you can always see if you have the latest version. I hope to provide 2 or 3 updates every year. The updates will consist of adding new (and maybe old) tourneys, correcting mistakes and inconsistencies, adding extra information, etc. I also have to verify the studies and problems with the well known databases (Problem Database, Meson, latest edition from Van der Heijden, etc.). There is still a lot of work on my “to do” list.

The main purpose of this database is being an aid for the tourney directors, so they can avoid using problems and studies which were already used in earlier tourneys. It can also be used by solvers for training purposes.

It’s easy to search for all sort of information: composers, sources, tourneys, positions, etc. The most important element is probably the name of the composer. One can argue about the spelling of some names, but at least in this database the names of the composers are all consistent.

The database is free, but I ask you not to use it for commercial purposes.

Finally, I would like to thank all the people who have helped me by collecting all the material. A special thanks (in no particular order) for Axel Steinbrink, Brian Stephenson, Hannu Harkola, John Garoufalidis, Dolf Wissmann, Ignaas Vandemeulebroucke, Ward Stoffelen and Marko Klasinc. And of course, the websites from Lubomir Siran and Piotr Murdzia were very helpfull.

Nice work. If this is official database of WFCC you should ask tourney directors to send you problems. And directors should send you problems. Subcomitee will surely help you.
