Josef Kupper (10.3.1932 - 5.6.2017)

Josef Kupper was one of the strongest players in the history of Swiss chess; among other successes, he was 3 times OTB champion. His most prestigious tournament was the 1959 interzonal in Zurich (against Tal, Fischer and Keres).

Rather than pursuing professional chess, he opted for a career as an actuarian; he ended up being vice-CEO of one of Switzerland's biggest insurance companies.

His 1st prize #8 in the Schwalbe miniature tourney 1957 is among the best moremover miniatures of all times.

After his retirement, he resumed problem chess, with had remarkable success, in particular if his diminishing eyesight is taken into consideration. He and his wife also attended a number of WCCCs, where he solved for the Swiss team.

He was awarded the OTB IM title in 1955 and the solving FM title in 2007 - 52 years between titles may be a world record.

Oh, this is sad. A couple of weeks ago I received a selfmate by him with a very friendly postcard in it.

Great personality, surely a pride of Swiss chess. I guess Hans Johner had some influence on him.

@Thomas

Really marvelous problem, see http://www.yacpdb.org/#76215. But with very natural extension for only one move (#9) and change the pieces as following: wSg4-h2 and bBh4-g5 we will get new quality i.e. traveling white knight from h even to a file and back (coast to coast, NBA basketball jargon), and from 2 to 8 rank! Now stipulation is #9 with key 1.Sh2-g4! Bg5-h4 (the only move) and we reach original settings. Here, also exist very natural tries: 1.Sf1? Bf4! and 1.Sf3? Be3!. Author was probably afraid of some possible cooks in mentioned tries. But nowadays we enjoy modern technology benefits and can check it very easy. Or TT was for moremovers only till 8 moves. Could somebody check it? I should write solution more appropriate as: 1. Ng4! Bh4 2. Ne3 Bg3! (if any 3.Nd5) 3. Nc4! (3.Nd5? Be5!) Bf4 4. Na5!! Bd6 (4...Bc7 5.Nb7! Bd6 6.Nbd8 etc.) 5. Nc6! Bc5 6. Ncd8! Be3 7. Ne6 Bh6 8. Kg3! etc.

Hi Branislav

That's interesting!

I don't think that the Schwalbe tourney was restricted to 8 moves, but I don't have access to Die Schwalbe 1957.

Since your suggestion is published here, I think that it's ok if I mention it in the obituary in the next issue of idee&form?

Hi Thomas,
ask others for theirs opinion, but I think that my version contribute the higher quality of this marvelous problem. Of course, I do not want my name besides the Kuppers, try to reduce my personal contribution. In fact, I saw this at glance, it is not the product of deep analyze.
