The Pape Theme-In A Helpmate!

I've never seen it before-the Pape theme in a helpmate. There's plenty of directmates, but I haven't managed to find one in a helpmate, although it's certainly been done before. Motivating White's double step and Black's en passants would be enormously diffucult without using check. I have long, long desired see a Pape helpmate, and, after a long, long while, I finally cracked it tonight! It's crude alright, especially given the promoted piece, but I like it nonetheless.

h#2.5
(= 8+8 )

I'm certain that it has been done properly already-it always is unless it isn't.

I suspect *because* the wK has to be in check (there is NO other way, as the position is identical after single step and capture), it hasn't been done. Which should be no argument against doing it. :-) So, just lets eliminate that promoted bishop...
(= 7+4 )

EDIT: Deleted Pb4,Pb5, they are superfluous! Also, Be3 could stand on a7 with no ill effect either.

Fabulous work Hauke! A much better grade too. I particularly favor how you made it so that the double-step isn't the only legal move, thus purely necessitating it for the line openings. The same bishop gives two different mates as well.

Overall, a worthy improvement.

Perhaps in H#3 with a checking key is also possible:

(= 5+8 )

Vlaicu, you're position doesn't quite work because of the possiblity of 1. Qh6-+bph6 fixes that. But now only one e.p. works because g2 isn't protected. I can't find a way to do it, so a correct and full h#3 would be nice indeed.

I had that idea too; but note that your version has only one variant!

This version is correct, but I didn't bother to eliminate
all the cookstopper material yet:
(= 10+11 )

h#1.1.2.1.1.1, 1.Rf6+ c4 etc.

I incidentally discovered the following H#3 realizing the Pape theme in twins.

A wonderful find Vlaicu. It reinforces Hauke's statement that check is the only way to motivate the h# Pape. And a very fine presentation Hauke!

It's also possible on the other side of the board, complemented by a terrible key.

h#3
(= 8+8 )

EDIT: No, you're not going crazy! :) I've economized and edited the position several times.

In the problem pointed out by Vlaicu, the positions in which the en passants occur differ in two respects, WS and BQ. I wouldn't call it a Pape; otherwise, where's the limit. (But of course one can again always ask if a Pape in helpmate exists at all.)

"Herr Pape ist mir piepe! Ich pupe auf Herrn Pape!"
(Heinz Erhardt, probably)
So, while technically the problem takes some liberties,
I vastly prefer it to my more strict rendering.
(Even if the latter surely can be sanitized by a h# expert.)
