Recent Valladão studies

Here I want to show two recent impressive Valladão studies. Have fun!

(= 7+6 )

Gady Costeff
The Problemist, 2007
White to move. Win
(exact source unknown to me)

According to Harold van der Heijden's definition, this is a perfect Valladão with only K+R+P (this material was theme of the Kalandadze JT, by the way). Sadly, Gady Costeff wasn't able to create it as a meredith. This shows the difficulty of creating this. His position reminds me to the studies of Ernest Pogosyants where one always has to wonder how this could not have been shown before (btw: one of my favourite of those Pogosyants studies: wKd5 Bh1 Pc7 bKb7, Win).

(= 10+7 )

Siegfried Hornecker
König und Turm, May 2007, p.31 (solution p.54)
White to move. Win

I actually have to thank Hörning and Josten since I visited them im Cologne in 2006 where I found (in my pension) the matrix. If I wouldn't have been bored there I most probably wouldn't have tried to create a Valladão.
Another Pogosynants-like matrix (see definition above). Three promotions. I sadly couldn't include a bishop promotion yet (it should be possible in some way although extremely difficult). I had to use 17 pieces on a position where six black pieces were taken by white pawns. Another proof of the difficulty of the task.

Please send comments (I'll give those to my study to "Känig und Turm" as there are always not enought comments)!

To show the Valladão in a Study is something very difficult and meritorious, far more than in other forms - In Siegried's Website, we can find the most complete page on the Valladão in Studies, with a lot of spectacular material (SH, keep the good work - in composing & publishing) http://sh-kunstschach.eu/start/studientheorie/0004_valladao.htm

Thanks for mentioning my article. :-)
I translated it tonight and hope it's mostly correctly translated.
http://sh-kunstschach.eu/start/studientheorie/0004_valladao_en.htm

At the moment it contins 12 studies (including two of me).

PS: On slower connections the diagrams will take a while to load (around 50KB per diagram).

PPS, June 16th: I corrected an obvious mistake (I know how to write it, normally, but for some reason I thought, price is correct - well, good to know now - it's because it sounds like price and both mean the same in german. Sorry for the inconvenience!) (see 2 posts below). Also, you are free to send notes to me. I always see when I get one (I know some people don't but I hope this will be corrected soon).

Thank You, Siegfried - The link is working. To publish in English is still the best way of reaching a larger audience, at least people have no need of activating the translator machine...

Siegfried, I checked the English. Not bad, except for the typical German misuse of 'Price" for Prize". I only mention it becuase I would like to see less of it....

And the article was great, of course...

1. Cooked (5...Kc8 draws)

2. Dual (4.Sf2 wins, too)

3. Dual (found by me, not listed in hhdbiii) 4.Bxa3+ Kxd5! 5.Rf8 Qb7 6.bxc7 Qxc7 7.Rf6 Qb8 (or hxg3 8.Rxa6) 8.Kg2! hxg3 9.Rxa6 etc

4.

(= 7+8 )

Looks valid. I'll add this soon.

A small but funny thing I composed on 17.xi.2005:

(= 7+6 )

SH, original
White wins

The last moves obviously were (retro) 1. b5xc6+ e.p. c7-c5 2.b4-b5+

Solution:
1...Kc7 2.Bxb2 Rxb2 3.d8Q+! Kxd8 4.O-O-O+ Kc7 5.Kxb2 wins

EDIT: Example 4 given above is also cooked:
@3: Pervakov=O Shakhmatnaya Poezia=38 21-12-2006 (information taken from hhdbiv)

This reminds me of an old joke: there are no correct endgame studies...there are only studies that have not been cooked yet.

Per, this is a great argument for "Nalimov studies" :-)

Costrff's study won a special prize in The Problemist 2006-2007 judged by Oleg Pervakov. There is another correct valladao recently composed but cannot be published yet.
