Nopiecers

Referring to a remark in the solution corner in the new SCHWALBE:
Problems with no pieces and just conditions exist (even if we
deliberately leave out the whole chess-math corner, IllC and all
that - the pieces shall land on the board by play). I surely have
seen some, but don't recall any in particular. Do you have some
neat examples? (No Andernach in-jokes either, please :-)

Although "neat" is not the kind of word for it, I remember a nopiecer.

For anybody understanding German, the discussion about it is an absolute classic:

Mr.Harris quoted it recently in Julias Fairies, commenting probably that it is a record for the number of fairy conditions (SIX !).

In no-piece diagrams, the hard part is to have a unique solution, without the symmetrical cooks. The following problem takes care of that:

Kevin Begley & Kostas Prentos, The Problemist, 2010
(0+0) Add the fewest units, so that white’s next move can be mate (#1) or quadruple check (++++1)
Equipollents Anti-circe

[Equipollents Anti-circe = Upon capturing, a unit (Kings included) must be reborn onto an unoccupied square, the same distance and in the same direction beyond the capture square; otherwise, the capture is illegal (e.g. Sb1xPc3 would annihilate the Pawn, clear the c3 square, and rebirth the Knight at d5; if d5 were occupied, or off-board, the capture at c3 would be illegal)]

I will post the solution later, in case someone wants to try it.

(= 0+0 )

(first row only)
SH, original

The field f1 is free. Other pieces' placement unknown.
Mate in one.

1.O-O-O! and either checkmate (if bKg1, regardless of what is on h1) or stalemate (if bKg1 and bBg1 or bSg1). There can not be any rook or queen on g1 since that would have made castling impossible. For the same reason, no other pieces can be on a1, b1 or e1 now.

It is not exactly a nopiecer, but it is fun.

I do not remember allowing fairy pieces. Or anything on f1. :-)

Black king on e1 then. And you didn't forbid fairy pieces :)

Thanks Jacques! Juraj Lörinc also solved it.
The intended solution is the following diagram:
(= 4+1 )
Now, 1.0-0++++ is quadruple check
and 1.Kd2# is mate

Needs explanation. Why is Kd1 not mate? Why the Sd3? Is a capture legal
if rebirth would be outside of board? (If yes, forget preceding
question.) Does the capture rule merely protect the King from illegal,
but not from legal captures (seems obvious to assume, since otherwise
you can't get the King offboard at all :-). Oh, and why not Kf1 mate
either? BTW, is the wK in check in the diagram? (If yes, forget ALL
of preceding questions, 1.Kd1+? Kf1!.)

Fairy chess. More fun than Internet fetish pr0n...but much less logical :-)

Kostas has given the definition of Equipollents Anti-circe.

Equipollents Anti-circe = Upon capturing, a unit (Kings included) must be reborn onto an unoccupied square, the same distance and in the same direction beyond the capture square; otherwise, the capture is illegal (e.g. Sb1xPc3 would annihilate the Pawn, clear the c3 square, and rebirth the Knight at d5; if d5 were occupied, or off-board, the capture at c3 would be illegal)

Let's see your questions and my answers.

Q: Why is Kd1 not mate?
A: Because of 1...Kf1! and Rxf1(Rd1)?? is illegal.

Q: Why the Sd3?
A: To have quadruple check after 0-0++++

Q: Is a capture legal if rebirth would be outside of board?
A: No, it is not legal. (As a consequence, kings in corners are quite safe.)

Q: Does the capture rule merely protect the King from illegal, but not from legal captures (seems obvious to assume, since otherwise you can't get the King offboard at all :-).
A: Any fictive capture of King making check should lead to rebirth of capturing piece, just like in normal Anticirce. ;)

Q: Oh, and why not Kf1 mate either?
A: 1...Kg1! and 1...Ke2! (Actually, I have solved the problem, but I have given 1.Kf1! as mate without using the board.)

Q: BTW, is the wK in check in the diagram?
A: No, it is not as bKxwK would result in bK rebirth off-board. If wK was in check, 0-0 would be illegal.

*Anti*circe. Ouch. I was thinking of Circe all the time...
this also explains Sd3 which checks when the rook moves.
My head hurts :-)
