The Albrecht #2 collection on the web

Great news from Udo Degener, who uploaded the Albrecht twomovers collection on the web!

http://www.schach-udo.de/dab/zwei.htm

Interface is in German, very neat and clean, alas the moves are not 'clickable'.

You can search for themes and positions, and there is an extensive theme-index.

Udo even uploaded scanned images of the original Albrecht's archive!

He had been working on this project for years now. It's nice to see it implemented in such a typical German-style accuracy.

Well done!

Technical speaking, it was already available for betatesters like me
and I pestered him with my "great" improvement ideas :-)

Wonderful! Had read a lot about how this great collection had been maintained - filing cabinets, etc. Would never have imagined I would see it one day.

so how do you search for a multiple of themes at the same time? say, selfpin and Zagoruyko?

Should be

selfpin%zagoruijko

with % denoting "any letters inbetween" and
"selfpin" would find "indirectselfpin" too.

But first look up the German theme names ;-) (EDIJT: Seeij how Ij ijnstijnctijvelij spelled ijt? :-)

Thanks Hauke!
an additional question...do you have to be logged in to do searches?

Atm there's no need to login, as there's no option you can add a comment, edit, etc.

Btw you can switch the interface (not the names of themes, of course) to English, French, Italian and Spanish.

The advanced search looks powerful too.

Is there a way to print (or copy) a selection of problems? I have found some problems that I want to copy into a Word document, but there are too many to do individually.

Note: its a work in progress (not all records are complete)

Albrechts author card-index and notebooks (at the time 39 from 168) (click to enlarge) based only on the 85.000 problems collected by Albrecht himself.

Placeholder for search: % ( several characters ) and _ ( one character )

@eugene
If you search for selfpin (Selbstfesselung) + zagoruiko =
Selbstfesselung%Zagoruiko

You can specify by addition of W (weiß, white) or S (schwarz, black)
SelbstfesselungW (white selfpin)
SelbstfesselungS (black selfpin)

or by addition of the thematical pieces (KDTLSB - KQRBSP)
Zagoruiko BlackPiece BlackPiece (example: ZagoruikoDS or ZagoruikoKKK)

Selbstfesselung%Zagoruiko (found 517 results)
SelbstfesselungS%Zagoruiko (black selfpin, 481 results)
Selbstfesselung%ZagoruikoKK (36 results)
Selbstfesselung%ZagoruikoTS (25 results)

Addition of thematical pieces works in some other modern themes.
- LeGrand Black White White (example: LeGrandDLS or LeGrandKTS)
- Bannij Black Black - White White (example: BannijBB-TS or BannijKB-DT )
- Dombrovskis Black Black - White White (example: DombrovskisDL-TL )
- Wladimirow Black Black - White White (example: WladimirowLB-TT )
- Lacny Black Black Black - White White White (example: LacnyKKK-DLS )
- zyklischerLeGrand Black White White White (example: zyklischerLeGrandBTLS )

also in halfpin (Halbfesselung). in combination with W (white) or S (black) and lat/diag (lateral, diagonal)
example:
- HalbfesselungSDS-lat (lateral black halfpin of queen and knight, queen stands closer to the black king)
- HalbfesselungWSS-diag (diagonal white halfpin of two knights)

also in halfbattery (Halbbatterie)
example:
- HalbbatterieSB-diag (diagonal white halfbattery of knigt and pawn, knight stands closer to the black king)

I possibly mentioned it already her on MPF, but the most funny "abuse" of the collection
is searching for a theme and sort by year. King-Schiffmann AND Dombrowskis Paradox, 1888! :-)

I'm learning! thanks for the help Udo! so multiple elements are seperated by space, comma, space!

how do you test for a theme and composer name? or theme and tries?

Planned for next year (copy to WORD).

@ eugene
"how do you test for a theme"

With my own brain.
View each problem individually.
Mistakes possible.

Thanks Udo. What do the "Z-" themes mean? It seems to have something to do with changed play, possibly showing the number of phases and the number of changed mates? It can sometimes be quite complex e.g. "Z-31(112)-24".

Z-xy-zt means any change of variations with the following content of variations:
x = number of thematical phases
y = number of thematical variations in each of them
z = total number of different defences in thematical variations
t = total number of different mates in thematical variations

This form of classification implicitly assumes the same number of thematic variations in each phase, but then it was extended to the form of Z-xy(AB...)-zt, where AB...denotes the number of thematical variations in each phase and y=min(A, B, ...).

This classifiation is formal in a sense, but some themes can be easily detected: e.g. reciprocal change is Z-22-22, ordinary Lacny cycle is Z-23-33, change of 2 mates in 3 phases is Z-32-26. But for most Z-schemes there are multiple possible underlying themes: Z-24-44 can be both double reciprocal change as well as 4-fold Lacny cycle, with multiple-phase theme even much more flexible.

For various examples see http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/ti_z.htm

This classification was developed by B. Formanek some 50 years ago and became de facto standard.
