French Composition Tourney. Judgement of the section 1

Theme: Lortap
A piece can capture only if it is not observed by a piece of its side.

Section 1: All problems but retros and SPG.

From Dec.13th 2007 untill Jan.20th 2008, 17 authors have sent 62 valid entries for the section 1 of the tourney.

Belgium (1 author), Brasil (1), Denmark (1), France (7), Germany (2), Romania (2), Serbia (1), Singapore (1), and Slovakia (1)

Judgement of the tourney
Jacques ROTENBERG.

Many thanks to the authors, and to Guy Sobrecases for the hard work done, so quickly, with good humour and efficiency. The general level is quite good, and it was a pleasure to examine all these works, including those that are not selected.
The condition Lortap proves to be promising.

A beautiful diagonal/orthogonal echo bringing a difficult strategic blend of valves of the white thematic pawns, model prison of the black King, and exchange of functions between Re7 and Bc6 which, in turn, give a Lortap effect to the black King, and give mate to the white one.

A specific development of the “dentist theme” (in a selfmate, the black defense unpins a white piece, and that creates a black battery which is used for the mate) nicely intricate.

The problem puts forward a new variation on the Moscow theme (or Chicco-Moscow theme): White threatens a double check and the black thematic defence closes a white line and controls directly the other check. Here, you have, in place of the closure of the white line, an opening of a white line for a Lortap effect!

A nice contrast Patrol/Lortap, a well executed 8. The Sentinel condition fits well this scaccographic problem, indeed, 8 is the unit of the number of the year and also the number of pawns of a player, and also the maximum number of pawns in sentinel (the other pieces - except the King - may be much more numerous)
