It was horrible to read that Russian problemists were punished (with sentence of several years in labor camps) for composing selfmates :(

The PhD thesis, "Storming Fortresses" by Michael Hudson is a riveting and disturbing read. Really saddening to know that famous names like Barulin, Salkind, Kaminer... were victims of the purges.
Couldn't imagine that people could be punished for composing and publishing problems with "formal" and non-game related ideas...
