Siegfried Hornecker 25 JT / MT

I announce the Siegfried Hornecker 25 JT or in the unfortunate case of death in the following year as MT in two categories.

1. Tasks and themes (eg)
2. Kings and Pawns (#2 + #3 + #n + eg)

Please wait until January 1st 2011 for sending compositions, but you might want to start composing now. Judge in case of JT is myself, in case of MT a director and judge still has to be announced - anyone is welcome to apply. Note that in that case if it becomes an MT you are not allowed (obviously) to participate.

Section 1 is for studies only, showing tasks or themes not shown before.

Section 2 is for endings with kings and pawns, either in a direct-mate or in a study. Note that the section is judged as a whole, not individually for each stipulation.

In each section a prize fund of 100 Euro for the first three placements (50/30/20) is guaranteed. Of course this is not much but please be aware that I have to pay this privately. It is possible to win multiple prizes. In the case that there are not enough entries to one of the sections it is possible that more prizes are given out on the other. The term "prize" solely depends on the money prizes and is given by ranking (i.e. an honorable mention can also receive prize money if it is one of the best compositions of the tourney).

Send entries no earlier than January 1st 2011 and no later than March 19 2011 to tournament director and judge:

Siegfried Hornecker
Matthäusstr. 15
89520 Heidenheim
Germany
sh_etjoedy@gmx.eu

E-Mail submission is preferred.

EDIT: Since I received a worried reaction, there is no real need to concern about my health. I just like to have planned for all eventualities!

Please ignore the text above. Here is an official announcement:

-----

I announce the Siegfried Hornecker 25 JT (if the jubilee dies while the tourney is open, it is held as MT) in two categories.

1. Tasks and themes (eg)
2. Kings and Pawns (#2 + #3 + #n + eg)

Section 1 is for studies only, showing tasks or themes not shown before or notable improvements from previously shown tasks or themes.

Section 2 is for endings with kings and pawns, either in a direct-mate or in a study. Note that the section is judged as a whole, not individually for each stipulation.

In each section a prize fund of 100 Euro for the first three placements (50/30/20) is guaranteed, regardless if they are ranked as prizes, honorable mentions or commendations. If there are not enough placements in one section, the remaining fund is redistributed equally among both sections. In the case of special achievements additional money prizes will be offered, orientating on the normal prize fund.

Twins are allowed, multiple solutions are only allowed if justified. There is no maximum number of entries per author. If a study shows a task or theme with kings and pawns only, the author should specify in which section he wants to enter it; for fairness reasons participation in both sections at the same time is not possible.

Send entries no later than March 19, 2011 (25th birthday of the jubilee) to tournament director:

Youness Ben Jelloun
N°6 Rue 9 Hay Salam Ainkadous
Fes
Morocco

or via e-mail to Younessbenjelloun@gmail.com

Judge is the jubilee; or in case of an MT he will be announced by the tournament director. The tournament will be judged anonymously, i.e. the entries will be anonymized.

Two weeks left to participate. Ignore the first posting, the correct announcement is in the second one and here:

I received a Word file today by Youness Ben Jelloun with 56 anonymised studies and problems. He did not sort them in sections one and two, so I'll need to do that and create computer readable entries. Judging, as you can see, will take a while.

I didn't know I have so many friends, so already a big thanks to all participants (please don't reply here)!

As far as I see, someone misunderstood and sent me a - although very nice - twomover where the entry obviously was created by WinChloé. The directmates were only for positions with kings and pawns only, so he is free to reuse it.

EDIT: The following entries will have to be disqualified. The authors are free to reuse them.
no.2 - Directmate in 2 with pieces other than kings and pawns
no.37 - Directmate in 3 with pieces other than kings and pawns

Gentlemen, a short update.
I did not quite get into making the award yet due to a small but heavy issue.

I would need someone who did not participate and does not want anything in exchange (haha, great - well, I can send a book or something) to enter the entries into a PGN database.

My great wish would be to have the preliminary award published on 19th December 2011, but the time runs away. That would enable me to have the final award at my 26th birthday.

What a lazy and slow turtle you are!

@Sergiy: You think he's slow now? Wait till his 30th JT. :-)

@Siegfried: Are you just looking to generate diagrams? If so, I can help with that. I also wrote a Forsythe-to-richtext diagram conversion program that's available on the SG website, http://www.strategems.org. You'll find it on the GC Fonts page.

Authors will be pleased to know I aim for the 19th December 2011 as the date of award publication. This would mean the award becomes final at 19th March 2012 = my 26th birthday. After having finished some other duties, I work on it now. :-)

Dan - your nice conversion program seems inapplicable under 64-bit Windows. Is there an update?

Dan -
A remark about a bug in the GC Font-chart (or whatever the name is):
In GC2004D font chart the light-square black S and black P switched view;
In GC2004X font Chart the light-square white S and white P (rotated more than 180 degrees) switched view.

@Uri -- I don't have a 64-bit compile of the conversion utility, but I know someone who does. I've asked him to forward a zipped copy. I'll post online when it arrives.

I don't see the font-chart errors you're referring to on my desktop copy of the PDF, nor on the SG.org copy:

- GC2004D char=171: bS on light square, normal rotation
- GC2004D char=187: bP on light square, normal rotation
- GC2004X char=163: wS on light square, 45-degree rotation
- GC2004X char=179: wP on light square, 45-degree rotation

Didn't see any 'neighboring' characters that were incorrect. What ASCII codes are you referring to?

EDIT: If you don't mind, please email me directly about this. I'd rather not "clutter" Siegfried's thread with an off-topic discussion. :-) dmeinking /A/T/ roadrunner etc. etc. Thanks.

If no asteroid falls onto my head :-) the award becomes final at 19th March 2012, afterwards the rewards will be given out. Wishing you all a merry christmas, nice chanukkah, happy new year and whatever you celebrate. Oh wait, I'm not A.C. White, so no red leathern book for everyone. I hope the PDF will do. :-)

The final award is published. There are only minor changes, and none in the ranking. The both main changes:
A confusing description was corrected and a final page without any relevance to the actual award added, rendering it final.

The preliminary award can still be found at the old location. The final award can be found at http://sh-kunstschach.eu/sh25jtfinal.pdf

I thank all participants! The winners will be contacted by me.
