A stellar Avner problem (Israel vs. Switzerland 1959, 1.p, #3)

My friend Steven B. Dowd posted over two years ago on the chessgames page of Uri Avner a problem from his early period:

(= 8+6 )

Uri Avner
Match Israel vs. Switzerland 1959, 1st place
Mate in 3

It is a few years now but still vividly in my mind that I saw a problem that was taken aboard Soyuz 9 into space. I have written about that story elsewhere on this website, so let me re-quote the problem.

(= 7+5 )

Valentin Rudenko
Suomen Shakki 1957, 1st prize
Mate in 3

Yes, the two problems are sufficiently different in the solution, but their matrix is too similar to not think of a partial anticipation, although I find Avner's solution more humorous.

(with apologies to the late master)

Two mutates. The main difference between them is the swap between the set and real play.
Although Avner's has two additional variations in the set play, I think it should have been labelled "after Rudenko".

I agree. While interchanging set actual play is an improvement, the problem is indeed anticipated by Rudenko. I believe Rudekno would have considered this possibility but rejected it unwilling to add material. In any case, it shows how highly talented Unri Avner was.
