a) http://yacpdb.org/?id=379899
b) I could swear this came up on MPF somewhen already,
c) I could look up the Degener 2# theme primer, but only tomorrow.

Nothing immediately helpful, eh? :-)

Hauk is right. This probably shows the Rice theme http://yacpdb.org/?id=379899.

Self pin by two different white pieces on the same square. Ideal I think will be if there are two unpins by black in both phases.

thanks Seetheraman! (check your note inbox by the way!)and Hauke. Just got word from John....the theme in its fullest sense requires 2x2 unpin variations.

Yup. So does also the entry in Degeners book say.

If I may ask, in what format is the Degener theme primer available?

Interestingly, in his book Chess Wizardry - New ABC of Chess problems J.M.Rice does not mention 'Rice cycle' (mentioned as Cyclic change) or the 'Rice theme' (ignored!).

I'm probably the obvious person to reply to the most recent posting on this subject. The "Rice cycle" is a term adopted by Peter Gvozdjak for his book Cyclone, which appeared in 2000. My Chess Wizardry dates from 1996. I was unhappy with the use of "Rice theme" for a white self-pinning theme which, though I had worked on it fairly intensively in the 1950s and 1960s, I certainly didn't invent; many other better composers had shown it before. So I didn't mention it in my ABC of Chess Problems (1970), the earlier version of Chess Wizardry.

And while some people know, it might actually be useful to explicitly say, what is that Rice cycle, different from Rice theme.

Rice cycle is a cyclic change of mates (or attacks more generally) following two constant defences in three phases, according to letter scheme aA,bB - aB,bC - aC, bA, where a, b stand for defences and A, B, C stand for mates. See example: http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/cyclone2.htm#uloha1 or more at http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/ti_r.htm#ricec

@Eugene: A very small but very handy book. Check here for details:
http://www.amazon.de/Von-Ajec-Zappas-Problemschach-Lexikon-Zweiz%C3%BCger-Themen/dp/3940531529/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422443646&sr=8-1&keywords=ajec+zappas

Note: *only* twomovers, so it's not surprising you need five Degeners
to weigh up one Milan.

I think there is no need that a big oligopolist makes some profit here. You should rather try it here:

Send an e-Mail to Udo he will certainly send you a copy.

@Sven: Srsly, but guess which link Google suggested first and
successfully speculated on my lazyness? :-)
