A limerick by Herbert Grasemann

My translation:

Every evening on the table's mid,
Watson's own(?) problems were a hit
but it brought him in guilt,
none had he himself built,
Sherlock Holmes found, this guy is like sh-
urely made for composing. Why doesn't he go into the Schlager music business?

Well, I give it 5/5 for truthfullyness to the original and
3/5 for metric (surely no Letztform). (Also /s/Schlager/pop/
would be a suggestion, despite the fact that the German word
indicates much more disgust.)
My only problem with this limerick must be blamed on Grasemann
- Watson is out of character. But that's due to the rhyme and
it could be worse anyway. (Do me a favor and do NOT google
"Sherlock" "Watson" "slashfic". :-)

sic # "Doch war alles geklaut,
kein Stück (selbst) gebaut."

or maybe better this variant:

"Doch war alles geklaut,
kein Stück SELBER gebaut." ... etc

(...besides of making a double six syllabic...)

At least two versions of this limerick have been published before, both differing from (1). This one is by Grasemann [Schach ohne Partner, 1977]:

Es beliebte nach Tisch Dr. Watson
mit (hm) eignen Problem-Hits zu protzen.
Doch war alles geklaut,
kein Stück selber gebaut.
Sherlock Holmes fand: Der Kerl ist zum Ko-
mponieren geradezu prädestiniert! Warum geht er nicht in die Schlagerbranche?

Once upon a time, rhymes like these had inspired me to the following "translation", where five solution line endings form a 'reciprocal limerick' by the two white actors:

MT, Die Schwalbe 1998
dedicated to the memory of Herbert Grasemann
(= 2+9 )

h#5 2.1. .. (2+9)

I.

1.Kf7 K d5
2.Rh8 K c6
3.Ke8 B a4
4.Bf7 B b5
5.Rf8 K c7 #

II.

1.Kg6 B c2+
2.Kh5 B e4
3.b5+ K e5
4.Bf2 K f5
5.Bh4 B f3 #

Pure formalism, of course ..

Yes, sorry, I misremembered a bit, it seems. I also got it from Schach ohne Partner. :-)
Thanks for the correction!
