The Fide Album

The judging of the Fide Albums is a very time-consuming occupation. Some experts of kinds are as a rule nominated for this duty. It seems to me that their hard work should be rewarded in a special way e.g. 5 points of which sum, separately counted, would constitute max. 34 % points missing to a title of composing (Fide Master, etc.).

I don't think that would be fair. It would be okay if they got some money or maybe the rank of an international judge but I don't see how they should be rewarded with a composing title (or parts of) just by judging.

PS (In reply to Marek Kwiatkowski below): It never was only a hobby to me.

I think that the chess composition is being seen by a lot of us in another way than just a hobby. It generates some conflicts of interest and can be the main reason of a large number of critiques. Let us take a distance to all. It will help us to find some good solutions.

Sorry, Marek, in my view this is definitely not a good idea. Any suggestion making the composing title easier to achieve is a contribution to potential inflation of titles. That included past suggestion to award WCCT or WCCI successes by FIDE Album points and yours is no exception. (And this I am saying despite both gaining some success in WCCI and having judged one section of FIDE Album.)

That Russia had not a single living grandmaster for endgame studies between 1990 and 2005 suggests that there is something very wrong with the system of awarding titles based exclusively on Fide Album points.

Or it means there are no more over-good russian composers. I believe it is good as it is where "Grandmaster" can be achieved in a lifetime, not in a couple of years like the OTB title.

To say that Russia had no GM level composer in that period is part of the absurd that I have tried to demonstrade by this extreme example of an unbelievable situation where top composers have barely FM titles. The title should perhaps be a lifetime achievement provided that its holder is left with a couple of years to enjoy this recognition. Besides, why wouldn't solving GMs receive it as a life-time achievement?

Hi Marek,

having been FIDE-Album judge several times in different sections, I meanwhile almost would be International Master only by judging ... I think the merits are different ... my motivation to do the Album judging job is intrinsical in nature, I am happy without any extra reward.
