I am sorry to hear that John Beasley, an innovator in chess mathematics, tablebases & studies, has passed on. I never had the chance to meet him face to face but in our email dealings he was unfailingly friendly, imaginative, precise & witty. I was delighted to find a copy of one of his books to buy in the local bookshop in Hong Kong several years ago. I recommend his website too.

I received the sad news that Sarah Hornecker (formerly Siegfried) died today. His mother told me this over the phone. Sarah was very active in this forum. She regularly wrote articles for EG and chessbase and was a successful study composer.
We were good friends.
My condolences to his family. Rest in peace.

Печальная новость - умер Владимир Кожакин (17/07/1957-16/03/2024).
Владимир жил в Магадане, активно составлял, в основном миниатюры, много лет редактировал журнал "Кудесник", автор многочисленных изданий по шахматной композиции, организатор разнообразных конкурсов составления, тренировал детей, учил решать и составлять шахматные задачи и этюды.
Владимир много сделал для композиции. Будем помнить его.

I never met a person who was comparable to Sarah, not in the booby house or even among problemists! Sarah, formerly known as Siegfried, has now left this world which she could never belong to or maybe never wanted to do so (the title of her book is “Weltenfern” (~away from the world)).
Sarah didn't make it easy for herself or for those around her, but she tried incredibly hard. An example: She allowed us (on April 28, 2023 in this forum) to continue using her old, discarded name where necessary in order not to distort the historical context; the author of the book mentioned above is Siegfried and not Sarah Hornecker, that’s the way it is!
But if you want to find out more about the person Sarah, formerly known as Siegfried, the book “Basti’s Welt: Schachmatt dem Chaos. Die Liebe siegt” written by her mother Monika Rehbein, is worth reading (only available in German)
Odette Vollenweider once wrote in her problem chess section in the NZZ:
“Problem chess does not require mobility. It can therefore brighten up long, difficult days for solvers and composers who are disabled or sick with its slightly invigorating, stimulating content - and contacts with problem chess colleagues are particularly important in this regard.”
Sarah, take care for you on your star!

Ушел из жизни замечательный шахматный композитор Яков Вульфович Россомахо.
В 1940-е годы, когда семья жила в Свердловской области, Яков Вульфович разрабатывал с братом Феликсом и коллегами Тагильскую тему в двухходовых задачах.
Огромный вклад в сохранение традиций Яков Россомахо внес, дав вторую жизнь журналу "Задачи и этюды", который продолжил выпускать с номера 9 и вкладывал душу и финансовые средства в издание журнала.
Свой организаторский талант Яков Вульфович, как член оргкомитета, проявил при подготовке Мирового Конгресса по шахматной композиции 1998 года, который прошел в гостинице Карелия в Санкт-Петербурге.
Вчера 10 апреля в Санкт-Петербурге прошло прощание.
Покойся с миром Яков Вульфович...

Today Monika Rehbein informed me that Sarah Hornecker's funeral will take place on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at the Güstrow cemetery.
I have compulsory classes that day and don't get any time off because Sarah wasn't a family member of mine.
Is there anyone from our problem chess community who can attend the funeral?

Yakov Rossomakho, a great man and a great composer, remained faithful to our beloved #2 till the end.
Many excellent #2 composers were gradually giving up, tired from the subsequent changes of fashion,
but Yakov was defending all #2 styles, including classic single-phase #2. And he kept investigating new
nuances all the time.
And #2 wasn't the only composing genre he was caring about. He didn't allow the fascinating history of
"Zadachi y Etyudy" to be forgotten and renewed it 64 years after it was closed by political reasons.
This magazine has survived severe circumstances of his life, the tragic death of his only son long ago,
and recent death of his beloved brother Felix, the well-known chess composer with whom he shared this love.
Yakov kept spending his money to send the printed version of the magazine to his faraway friends
and contributors, often asking who they are and how they live.
Long ago, he asked me if Milan would be offended to get some financial support for Mat Plus from him:
"You know - as editor to editor..."
Another part of life and history has gone with him.
