Hey Hauke, I have created a direct march with a clear motivation!
(= 8+7 )
It took a few trashy tries, but I eventually got it, legal AND dual-free, along with elagant simplicity.
Also, also, because this topic was originally about selfmates, I created a diagonal corner to corner selfmate. Although, there is a possibility of a dual by forcing the Black king to c8 if such a sequence can be find.

EDIT: I've also managed to make this selfmate in which the selfmating side does a direct diagonal corner to corner march.

The first problem has a dual, the king does not have to go to the corner:
6. Kd7 Bg8 7. Se8 Bh7 8. Sxc7 ~ 9. Bd6#
Maybe somebody is interested in these problems, none of them appeared in any award.

Funnily enough, I only remembered it AFTER I had finished my correction.
EDIT: I just realized that, with few pawn rearrangements, I can turn my above #11 into a #12.

It's not a solving contest. And why give the solutions? That would merely ruin the fun of solving it! Besides, given the context of the discussion, the solutions should be obvious and the ideas not to hard to see.
But it doesn't hurt to help those in need. Is there a particular problem of mine that you really want to figure out, but you can't, and thus you want to see the solution?

I cant figure out if more than two moves !! Anyway it is your choice to give solutions or not. Everybody else seems to manage without solutions.

Dang Joost, you're good at finding duals. Since my #11 doesn't hold, then neither does my #12.
I'm running out of ideas on how to fix my idea. I'm adamant that this one should hold up. This is because the WN can't move without letting the BK out. Any release on White's hold of the BK immediately destroys the mate. The economy is even better if this ends up being dual-free.

Third time is the charm?
Using the knight as the piece today be captured is easy as it easily contained. The real challenge for me is to somehow make a direct corner-to-cormer King move to capture a rook, which has far more range, along with making it legal and dual-free.

Nice try though Siegfred! Some of my problems may contain duals (not counting shorter solutions as those are cooks) but I sure as heck make sure that my soluions work.

Nice #12 with a bishop, Joost. Although what my problems are going for is a direct corner to corner march.
Also, has anyone ever thought about a bishop going step by step from one corner to the other?

Many years ago I did something similar in a study, but didn't manage to get it fully from corner to corner. But I wanted both kings to march, so I did what I could.

Interestingly, Stockfish declares your position a draw, Siegfried.
Also, if you want to see something funny, to to yacpdb and input "Siegfried" into the key bar. There is actually some results.
