Nobody solved my selfmate ;-(. I knew it was very hard (especially the fact that the best black answer is very hard to find) but did not expect that. I think one reason is that it was at the very end and the other items were very hard as well.

Since new titles were mentioned, I noticed that in the same FIDE Congress in Istanbul, Kacper Piorun was awarded the GM title as a player. He is now the newest member of the very small group (only 5 people, now) who are GMs in solving and otb chess. Congratulations, Kacper!

Looks as a pretty turbulent and exciting championship, besides the top performances there are some extremes:

1st day/2nd day: Nicula 42/4,5; Vachier-Lagrave 35/0

Looks that MVL not took part on 2nd day (only "-" in result table).

It surely looks like that, but some experienced solvers had troubles in 2nd day. Even the "secure" points that one might expect from s#2 turned out as decisive about the winner.
"0" in the table means wrong solution, "-" means nothing was written (but the solver still could have been solving), perhaps "x" might indicate that a solver did not attend the round.

A personal observation:

From my experience I can tell that the beauty of problem can be very accurately judged by a "beauty" of the respective column. For instance, last night I solved quickly and correctly threemovers 5 and 6 and liked both very much. I also solved 4, not so quickly and not so accurately, but neither enjoyed in solving it, nor liked it.

I don't know the 2nd day problems, but I am pretty sure that the helpmates are not the beauty champions, and also that the last moremover (15) is, if excuse my expression, an ugly problem. For the last selfmate I will not waste words: what's the point in selecting (and composing) the problem which nobody can solve and, even worse, not get the idea what it is about?

As a judge (director) of three recent championships (one ECSC and two WCSCs) I was criticized for selections of relatively lower difficulty than desired for this level of competitions. Nevertheless, if I were to do it again (which I won’t), I would make the selection in the same way as I did before. If nothing else, after each and every "my" round what one could see were happy (solver’s) faces, which I don't believe was always the case this time. (Well, some would probably disagree about one selfmate twomover in Jesi 2011 - I am afraid that few solvers are still angry at me about this incident)

Selecting a hard selfmate for the end gives a chance to a complete solver to show his full strenght or to amend his lower score (in studies, for instance), that's great. But too hard problem takes away such possibility and even disables any gain in solving time. With easy problems, the quickness, at least, could make a difference.
Anyway, selecting the problems for the highest level of competitions is extremely delicate job if the judge tries to examine the full and true strenght of the solvers. I would not easily blame the judge who seriously tries to achieve that, even if he fails in the end.

Now, when it is official, with congratulations to all participants, I have to express particularly my admiration to great Piotr. Fighting to the very end when the only realistic hope was to solve that s#7 and wait for the other results - it must have been stressing. But Piotr's amazing commitment prevailed, my sincerest congratulations!
