Which version would you prefer redux

If interested, take a look at:

http://kobulchess.com/en/problems/chess-originals-2014/456-steven-dowd-selfmate.html

Your comments there will be very helpful to me in that Diyan has told me I can decide later which of the two versions I enter as my final choice. Even if you aren't a selfmate composer, you probably have an opinion as to whether the "technical pawn" is a good or bad choice just based on the aesthetics of the two mates.

Thanks all!

To make it short: I am with Diyan in this specific case and think there is not a lot to add to his words.

For me you made the good choice, and I don't hesitate.

The mate in the middle of the board is lovely, nothing to be compared with a mate alike on the edge

Maybe it is more a question of expressing your own style in a composition than a matter of quality.

Thanks to both of you. In addition to Jacques' comment about the more centralized mates, I'll note that 1. Sa5 as key, since it was more of a move to the edge of the board than 1. Sb5, provided a better contrast to the centralized mates in my view. The moves of the S to the center are also uniquely refuted, and thus you have a little paradox in that an edge knight move (Springer am Rande bringt... nun einmal nicht!) is superior to one to the middle of the board.
