The Problemas issue has an article about help play to a dead position. Here for solving one more problem with this stipulation.

HDP 5.0
(help play to a dead position (DP) in five moves; Black begins, DP to be reached in the 5th move by White)

For those who do not solve this: the solution will be given in a couple of days.

For those who solved: the next step is...

Probably the first realisation of the theme was done by Michel Caillaud: P1004030

Solution to the problem in post 2:

Try: White needs four moves by the king to capture the black pawn f2 and one move with the g-pawn to get it captured. Black moves could be three to capture the e-pawns + Bxg3 +c1B. But when the bishop captures on g3 it prevents White from capturing on f2 or checks the white king on f2; in both cases no dead position in five moves. Solution: 1.f1R g3 2.Rf8 exf8B 3.c1B e7 4.Kd7 Kb6 5.Bxg3 e8Q DP

So, being nitpicky as always, one more question:
Is help play to a dead position orthodox (like directmates) or heterodox (like helpmates) or even specifically considered retro - or fairy?

Helplay is no longer Fairy ! It was... some decades ago.

The question asked in post 5 has got the right answer in post 6: help play to a dead position is not fairy. A couple of consequential questions have been asked in a new thread titled 'Why? Should?'

Helpmates are no longer fairy. But Helpselfmates are still considered fairy (though without justification), as also serieshelpmates/stalmates. So help play to a dead position will fall under this category.

Correct, helpstalemates are considered to be fairy without any justification. Agree that helpstalemates and help play to a dead position should be treated in the same way. But I don't see much justification in continuing to be inconsistent!
