how much of a solution should be written out?

let's start with a simple example. a two-mover has some try play. Interest lies in the refutations, the variations in the try play reappear in the solution after the key. should the variations be listed in the try play or only in the solution, since they're the same?

I thought that these simple cases are already covered by the published books and journals. Tries and Refutations followed by the Keymove and variations. If threats also form part of the theme, then threats for each of the tries and the keymove.

>a two-mover has some try play. ... should the [repeated] variations be listed in the try play or only in the solution, since they're the same?

In problem chess, of course, there is no official policy to settle these matters...
Here's my best guess what most problemists would expect:

In general, show only the thematic solution, and sweep any non-thematic variations (whether in tries or solution) under some parenthesis (w/ smaller font, if possible).
[exception: Sometimes, non-thematic tries are listed -- usually, to show that some otherwise idle piece does play a more active role (read: mercy plea to the judge).]
Nobody enjoys reading redundancies... thus, any repeated non-thematic limbs in the try-play, are often completely hacked off...
Just be careful you don't unconsciously abuse this guideline, by hacking limbs in which duals (those pety, non-thematic duals are a real test of character!) have crept in.
