A proof game puzzle and extension

The Puzzlers Cup arranged by Chess Café seems to be a competition that has faded away. The last one, as far as I know, was in 2014. It was won by an active member of this forum and the winning problem would certainly be worth citing; same goes for the other problems that got distinctions. My own contribution got the 2nd Prize; referring to the title of the competition it is a small puzzle. With just a puzzle it can be worthwhile to try to extend by a second phase and this has now taken place. The b)-part is an original published three years after the a)-part.

Thierry le Gleuher has made a proofgame with several chains, in which in every chain the black rook/knight switch places (so in diagram A, after 10 moves, the black last line is SRBQKBRS, in diagram B, after 20 moves, it's RSBQKBSR again, etc). The last part even uses the 50-move rule to differentiate between two possible solutions. It was published in Die Schwalbe as part of a construction composition a few years ago.

Thierry le Gleuher's chained proof game mentioned above got 1-2 Prize ex aequo in feenschach 62nd theme tourney; award in feenschach Heft 204 November December 2013. He shared the prize with himself having the six highest ranked problems and further two that got distinctions. The theme of the winning problem is oscillating by the rooks a8/b8 and g8/h8 combined with the knights exchanging between kingside/queenside (b8->h8, g8->a8 and h8->b8, a8->g8 etc.) in all phases. (The theme of my problem above is quite different, i.e. a knight is forced to move into the corner to get captured there as being captured on any other square is impossible).

Hello everyone,

The Puzzlers Cup was part of my column at ChessCafe.com. Unfortunately, they went out of business in 2015. I resumed The Puzzling Side of Chess on my own website in 2016, but have not yet revived the composing tourney.

The prize-winning problems from 2013 and 2014 are available in the archives at http://coakleychess.com/puzzlingside (columns 54 and 75). They include a jigsaw proof game by Thierry Le Gleuher and and a series-self-stalemate in 198 by Arno Tungler.

The most recent Puzzling Side (141) has six proof games, three of which feature rookless homebase pronkins.

Cheers
