Here is a special request to Russians or anyone else who can get hold of it. Is there someone who can get cheap CDs of Vasily Smyslov singing and who can bring those to Dresden for me to buy?

The thread about "fide album 13-15 studies" has been closed, but I had something "to add about the topic". Are there new decisions from the Dresden congress, like it was supposed in the comments 5 & 21 ? Can anybody inform us ? Thanks.

As far as I am aware, the judgment for endgame studies was confirmed and it was suggested that future albums need better judging, but I don't know if anything was decided at the WFCC meeting, as everyone was too tired to attend after debating for hours in the subcommittee. Maybe Harry can tell, if you write to him.

Thank you Siegfried for this honest reply. So, it was what we call in french "un enterrement de première classe" (a great funeral). See you later.

I sat in on a couple of Commission meetings and this topic was just one of a number of issues that came up which seem reveal a pattern of discontent with the current state of things.
It was notable that most of the bickering was about the competitive aspects - WCCT, WCCI, Albums, ratings, titles, judging...
It all seemed very depressing, but on reflection it is of course inevitable.
Because what we're doing is taking an art form and turning it into a sport.
However in most sports the criteria for success is objective - who runs the fastest, jumps the highest, scores the most goals - but for chess problems?
So there's always going to be squabbling given the subjective nature of judging - one has more and more sympathy for those composers who turn their back on the whole business.

The sporting analogy has more validity with Solving, but again, when chatting with participants, I was sometimes dismayed to find that they sounded more like chess players with their obsession with points and ratings, than problemists.

But there was one last import from the world of sport which left me both depressed and dismayed.
In the prize giving for the WCSC we had flag waving!
And then we had to stand for national anthems!!
Hopefully this was just a one-off aberration.
